The Gal Civ Encyclopedia is the first fan-run site for Galactic Civilizations 2. Harnessing the power of MediaWiki (the software that runs Wikipedia) we hope to create the most comprehensive online resource for a strategy game. All for free, all contributed to by the best in the GC Community. Come help us make the ultimate GalCiv 2 manual!

Creating The ULTIMATE Game Manual
Strategy games can be incredibly complex, with dozens of features, hundreds of strategies, and a near infinite number of combinations of units/ships/buildings etc It’s often a nearly impossible task to keep it all straight, and nowadays the manual that comes with a game barely scratches the surface. If you’re looking for a good resource for a given strategy game, chances are you end up browsing several different sites to get what you need, and those sites (unless part of a larger network of game sites) often go offline or fall out of date whenever the original owner gets bored with the game.

Such is the way of things for the average strategy gamer today. Strategy games represent a mountain of information and data that no one seems to have bothered to document anywhere in a coherent fashion. Site owners become bored with a game and wander off, leaving their sites unattended which leaves a late-comer to a strategy title at a distinct disadvantage.

Well, with the ever increasing popularity of Wikis (online encyclopedias which anyone can contribute to), the ability to build the game manual/reference site you always wished you had is here at last. What is a normally impossible task for one person can easily be accomplished if an entire community pitches in just a little bit of their time.

Make Your Mark
The great thing about Wikis is that anyone can contribute to them or edit content with corrections or additions. The community surrounding GalCiv is an excellent one filled with some really bright and talented individuals, and we hope to become a focus for a lot of that energy and knowledge. Everyone remembers JavaScout’s outstanding technology tree site that broke down all the techs and showed how they related right? Well, imagine having the full tech breakdown, but within the description for a given tech, you can link straight to the ship class you get as a result of that technology, or the new building you’ll get. From there you see that the new building gives you an economy bonus, and you
can then click to see an article analyzing economic system in the game, or a list of all economy boosting buildings in the game and how to get to them. Pretty cool huh?

Is a particular technology missing from the Wiki? Well then, go on in and create a new article for it. Log in and add your two cents. The only limit on what is covered is what people are willing to add.

Through Beta To Retail
With the start of the GalCiv 2 beta (3/24/05), we aim to start building up a comprehensive information resource for the game. As features are added and modified in the beta, so will the information in the Encyclopedia be updated. Have a question about feature X? Go to the Encyclopedia! Have a question about Technology Y? Go to the Encyclopedia!

We hope to make The Encyclopedia the most up-to-date reference for all matters related to GC2. The eventual goal is to have a complete and extremely detailed resource for players coming in at retail to fall back to when they’re stuck, or when they have a question.

Good Idea.

If all goes well it would be awesome if the final version of the Encyclopedia gets included with the shipped game or at least linked to when people have furtehr queries.

s a community could do is refer people back to articles when they post questions here.

There's a lot of potential to explore here!

I'm sorry but I don't support Wikipedia. I could give you reasons why but they are not suitable and/or relavent to this discussion.

or relavent to this discussion.

This website is not Wikipedia and is in no way affiliated with it, other than using the same software...

or relavent to this discussion.

I realise that, and I am glad that they are not affiliated with it.

to be useful I guess. They did the same for Supreme Ruler 2010 I think (the game is going gold soon).
