Lies, damn lies and statistics (or polls): Pro Bush SS poll

I'm now wondering (actually not really wondering, more like speculating and expecting...) if the polls that showed that the support for President Bush's Social Security plans was fading weren't conducted by the same people that did the exit polls that predicted that Kerry would win Ohio.

As an example, earlier this week the MSM (main stream media) was touting polls that showed that support for Bush's plan was fading fast. Yet... today there's the following news item in The Washington Times.

Social Security poll heartens Bush

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Three-fifths of people 55 and older think Social Security private accounts for younger workers are a good idea, as long as their own benefits remain untouched, according to a poll being released today by key supporters of President Bush's effort.
The poll -- commissioned by the leading grass-roots lobbying coalition that supports private accounts -- is meant to counter polls that have found support low for Mr. Bush's idea.
Its findings also could encourage House Republicans as they head home next week to sell the idea in their districts.

So, either these earlier polls were wrong, or this new poll is much more biased and must have been conducted amongst the hand-picked crowds that have been showing up at the Bush rallies.

Or.... perhaps the truth is that both polls are biased and somewhere in the middle is the real truth. This is the most likely truth.

People are responding in both directions, based on the information they are hearing and reading, and they're swaying between the sides because they don't have enough details to really make a decision yet. There's not a firm plan yet so people can't be sure whether or not they really want to support the plan or whether or not it's really a bad thing.

Which really means that for all the bickering and fighting that is going on, it's probably best if everyone slows down a bit and finds out what the real plan is before jumping to a snap conclusion about whether or not Bush is saving Social Security or if he's destroying it.
