Google Maps;: Is it as good as mapquest or yahoo?

I am trying to decide whether one map service is better than another. I know Google can have beta for some time and not really mean anything, but when it comes to going to a location that you don't know, you want the right direction.

Some people I know looking for jobs don't have a clue about maps, so I plan to try to teach them how to get somewhere when directions are schechy (spell??)

what do you guys think?

Google maps got me lost in the mountains of Vermont. The road I was traveling on just ended. It was supposed to go on for another 10 miles but Nooooooooo. It just ended.

Yeah looks good. I usually use mapquest, but they can be off in some things.

Google has better quality graphics (my opinion) than both mapquest and yahoo.
And they seem accuarate now that I have tested them.

are you saying mapquest can be off on somethings or Google Maps?

I live in the city and as of so far, Google has been on point, but so have the others. Google displays it better, but I must admit Yahoo shows more info on the maps and I do feel more comfortable with the fact that its been around for a while longer.

I think the people in my program (public assistance) should understand and be able to read maps as well as get maps as part of the program.

Getting lost happens, but give the tools needed to those who need it so they can find the location of these jobs.

I think yahoo will be the suggested choice for maps... it give accurat info on address and also things around the area... Google is more visual and can be used as a back-up to get more of an idea of what is up.

When I finish my report/proposal to Goodwill (who helps with public assistance) I'll post it on my wincust/joeuser blog.

Display quality isn't as nice as Google, but Google isn't too good in my area. And I prefer Mapblast to MapQuest (bigger maps)

yeah yahoo is reliable. What I do sometimes is take one from each (usually mapquest and yahoo) and then if one isn't clear on a specific location i look at the other. Or if one (talking about directions now) says turn left and one says stay going straight youll know that you will have the option to turn right or veer left.

So far it's been hit or miss with all of them for me. Google maps has been pretty good so far, while Mapquest has been wrong on a few things (saying I should take a right, when it should have been a left on a particular street).

Yes, I looked at your suggestion Paxx and I do like it. Plus, its not so heavy on the javascript so it might actually work on the computers at Goodwill Public Assistance.

The main issue is to give people the tools to find the job they are going to and know about the location they will be working in (hopefully). Directions are always helpful, but I use them mostly as suggestions and instead look directly for the location I want to be in, the surounding area in case I get lost, and look for the main route I will be coming off of before I get to the local roads.


I guess, I should suggest MSN (MapBlast) being that it is more likely to work on most computers, not as much javascript, very large enlargement of the map and so on.

MSN gives you the basics. Yahoo gives you the local suroundings and transportation links (but uses more javascript, cookies and activeX). Google is way more graphic and details (but is really heavy on the browser security settings if it is set to high)


I think the 'official' map guide on-line will be Yahoo, but for Goodwill, it will have to be MSN Google can be a graphical back up for more road details and I will suggest pocket maps for everyone

The idea behind what I am doing is to basically make yourself more employable by creating a personal knowledge base of information and data about topics of interest related to your choosen career path. (You can also create your own articles or blog posts on related topical subjects in your field, things that effect your field, ideas, work reports, thoughts on your profession)

The OTHER idea behind all of this is to also create a social network group with the ability to archive user information for later retriaval. Creating your own knowledge archives for later research, work projects, blogging, school projects, team assignments, personal endevors and to show what you can do to potential employers/business partners by showing that you can do research and answer tough questions.


To go further in depth, the idea is to create a working portfolio of what you did in the past, what your currently working on, your resume and to have a place that aggragates data that is focused on your goals/reasearch/self-improvement/work. It is sort of like a resume, but way more in depth and in the end will make you FAR more employable.

IE: Impress yourself, your boss with relavent articles and knowledge, have accurat school reports and have more than enough info on where you want to go in life professionally.


Over time, you would have created a place for your own research, inproving work reports with historical data, be more up-to-date with the latest news; basically you would actually start your research from your own website, and then branch out.
