Wildlife in my backyard

We live about 50ft away from a small creek at the end of our backyard.  It's provided us with a variety of wildlife, from herons to squirrels to snakes....

....but this evening D came running in from his evening smoke telling me to look outside and get his Maglite.

This is what I saw when I looked out of the backdoor:

A red fox! (obviously it wasn't that exact fox, but one a lot like it.)

I haven't seen one of those in years, and I do mean years....not since we left England.  He stood there and looked at us for a few seconds, then he slunk under the fence and down towards the creek.

I never expected to move to what is tantamount to suburban St Louis and see a bigger variety of wildlife here in 6 months than I ever did in 9 years in the Black Hills of South Dakota.

I'm not complaining, though....Mister Fox can come share my yard anytime he wants to.

How cool! I saw one on base when we lived in Maryland. That was the only time I ever saw one in the wild. You should look into making your backyard a backyard wildlife habitat Link. I would love to live somewhere more naturey. We are very suburban. I just have a huge backyard with a six foot fence. No trees, no nothing yet. I want to plant trees and I would love to have a frog pond.

Wow! I've yet to see a fox in my life. That is very neat. But I could have sworn Red Foxx died.

If you're near St. Louis, and you're an AF wife I assume it's Scott AFB? I'm in IL too. Closer to Champaign, though.

Isn't nature great We tear up the land, plop down our buildings and nature still finds ways to live with us.

Yep, that's where we're at.  You should drop me a line when you're in my neck of the woods and we'll go have coffee or something....

Locamama:  Good to hear from you!  The military doesn't like us making habitats out of their housing or I'd be all for it...

Danny:  I know....who knows what else is lurking out there after we're all in bed?

Foxes are vermin and should be totally eradicated. This fox-hunting ban here in Britain is a peasant farce!

How could you!!? Sure ANY animal can be a pain in the butt, but who's treading on who's toes here? I mean, truth is people are the burdens on nature not foxes! The fox, like any animal, has it's purpose in life. Nothing should be "eradicated" as it screws everything up. A fox is a beautiful animal, and I for one hope they are always around to be observed AND appreciated.
