Fat police lock up Chris

Ordeal ... Chris was dragged off in tears
Ordeal ... Chris was dragged off in tears by authorities

SOBBING 31-stone Chris Leppard was dragged off to a mental hospital against his will by meddling social workers and police.
Chris, 23, has been forcibly detained for a month because he cannot stop eating.
The authorities used powers normally used to detain mentally ill people who might harm themselves or others.
They locked him up despite the fact neither he nor his family wanted him to go. Last night Chris’s furious mother Anne said he has no mental problems and was winning his fight against the rare illness that compels him to eat.
Chris’s case was condemned by opponents of a nanny state. They asked whether others with life-threatening addictions could be next.
Mum Anne, 49, told of the agonising moment the ambulance came to take Chris — without warning.
She said: “Four people turned up and after some questions, said they were taking him away. Chris was really upset, crying, saying he didn’t want to go and that he wasn’t mental.
“We didn’t know they were coming to take him. He is being punished for being ill. He has a physical problem. He was working well towards losing weight.
“He asked social services to give him six months to prove he could lose weight. They didn't give him six days. I had stopped giving him money for food. For the first time in years we were getting somewhere. We had locked food cupboards, that was a big step.”
Chris, of Hastings, East Sussex, suffers from an incurable condition called Prader-Willi Syndrome. It means he can’t tell when his stomach is full and could eat so much that it will kill him.
East Sussex social services intervened after Chris appeared in a BBC1 documentary last month.

What is the right thing here? Let this individual eat himself to death (which it seems he's been doing for years), with help from his family, friends and others? Or, have the state come in heavy handed (no pun intended) and intervene for the individuals own good?

These sort of cases scare me. They scare me because I want less, not more, government interference in the lives of individuals. Yet, there are plenty of times that I see people like this that obviously have problems and need help. Do we want government to step in and protect those that seem to be unable to protect themselves, or do we go with the non-interference and let the individuals rights over-rule our concerns?

If a person was a threat to himself (which he clearly is) through a diagnosed medical (psychological) condition, I can understand seeking help. But the government getting involved is a little much ("heavyhanded", I think you punned).
Surely we can get this boy on a twelve step program (if he can take twelve steps...)

This is ridiculous. The man is 31 yrs old. If you look up the syndrome there are plenty of places he can get help himself, which it sounds like he was trying to do. The fact that the government jumped in and forced a grown adult into this is horrible. If you read the rest of the article there is a bill going through their legistlature that may make it possible for them to do this more often. Now that is really scary.
Great article.

Funny thing is the United States is on par with other countries for being fat, and the whole fat study had its figures blown out of proportion.

I read in a magazine (Newsweek or something like that) that geneticists are finding out that it is just plain old genetics that some people are finding out that a white man is more susceptible to a heart disease, a Asian man is more susceptible to a stomach disease, etc.

By the by, Hispanics are very susceptible to diabetes (I can tell you this from Personal Family History).

I read this over coffe this morning and had to go back and re-read to make sure I was actually awake.

Britan is in the process of passing a new Mental Health bill which would allow more situations like this to happen. It's absolute insanity.....and if this bill gets passed, it's only going to get worse...

There's more than 1 reason why the initials for Social Services is "SS".

When I was a paramedic we were required to report it when we suspected abuse or neglect. I had a hard time with that law because I have seen what the SS can put parents through, after they have been accused of abuse.

No "due process", no "asumption of innnocence", they were treated worse than criminals and were just told, "well, if you're not guilty of abuse, you'll cooperate with us and all this will be over soon. BS!!!

Now, for those who are guilty, I think the SS abuse of them is better than they deserve, but for those who aren't, justice is never served.

As long as we are insisting that government "protect us from ourselves", we are asking for this kind of treatment.

Is this literally or figuratively?
