DXplayer plugin doesn't work as widget

when in widgets

I created a fairly simple little media player using the dxplayer plugin and converted it to a widget. None of the controls work. I looked into the widget cache and the player files seem to be there, right click context menu on the widget controls shows 'player preferences...', but nothing.

How do I make it work?
