Carter ends silence, praises Iraqi voting
By Robert Stacy McCain
THE WASHINGTON TIMES
Former President Jimmy Carter, who predicted that elections in Iraq would fail and in the past year described the Bush administration's policy there as a quagmire, this week ended 10 days of silence to declare the historic Iraqi vote "a very successful effort."
"I hope that we'll have every success in Iraq," Mr. Carter said in a CNN interview. "And that election, I think, was a surprisingly good step forward."
The Nobel Peace Prize winner's comments on Wednesday contradicted his September assertion that the Iraq elections could not be held by January and ended a period during which the Georgia Democrat's failure to comment prompted one critic to gloat about the election success "shaming him into silence."

Please be sure to read through the linked article. There's some great quotes from Carter's original statements there, just to remind you of how negative he was previously.
I'm sure that the critic's comments weren't far from the mark on this one. Former Pres. Jimmy Carter has had to eat some of his words (as have many of his cohorts in the democratic party) in regards to Iraq. For as much as Teddy Kennedy and friends want Iraq to be a big bloody failure, there have been many successes there and in Afghanistan.
Regardless of those successes, we continue to have Clueless Old Liberals (COLs) like Gene and friends come tell us how badly things are fouled up, how much money and lives we are wasting, and how this mess will never be fixed.
I'm surprised in many ways that Carter was able to eat his words and acknowledge the success. I guess he assumes we're far enough away from the election cycle that he can admit the obvious and not have it ruin the chances for his own party in future elections.
Sooner or later (probably much, much later) democrats will learn to be careful about their pessimistic comments, as more and more of us are reminded of them and like the symbol of the republican party is known for, use that elephant memory to never forget.
