Is there a way to dock the dock a little further from the edge of the screen? I would like to have them on four sides, and still use my taskbar, but one will always be in the way. Can I change the properties to make it do this?

Can't you set it up so you can eliminate the taksbar?

I haven't seen the taskbar for about 1/2 a year

It only gets restored if someone else needs to use my PC

You now have 2 threads with this subject.
You can't move the standard docks away from the edge of the screen. You can incorporate the taskbar in one of your docks, and the systray in another. Or, you can use a tabbed dock and move it anywhere you want.

I haven't used the windows taskbar for 5 years, but OD+ is by far the best taskbar/systray replacement I've ever had!
