If they could only combine games
from
GalCiv2 Forums
Ok for whats it worth. I have played many space style games. I played GalCiv on a friends sysem then got if for myself. Some aspects I hate, some I enjoyed. Being avid Master of Orion Fan, both 1 and 2 when 3 came along I was first in line only to run screaming for a refund. How could a great series get tanked so bad
But I am not here to rant rather to ponder what if.........
1) A combat system where the data tables are used to populate a "volume of 3 dimensional space like that in homeworld 1 and 2. A computer is best at rapidly crunching numbers. Humans howver want eye candy. For the purpose of ship combat think of it this way. A data table containing the information of your Fleet is stored in a table. Now you invade a star system. Your pc then checks the enemies defense table and finds 1 planet with a certain number of gun or missle bases. Then it checks the orbitals to be found said planet. It then creates a blank volume of "space", puts that planet on one end ( like homeworld) puts the oribitals in place, then the defending ships around it. Then your ships go on the other end.
Yes this is alot of pre-programing, world types, different eye candy graphics but the actuall number tables could be done. And oh what combat it would be if you had true 3D ships with turrets blazing away. Add in engine speeds, missles, orbital defense minds, ahhh what a dream combat
For those that have read David Weber's Honor Harrington series imagine if there where gravity well limits, more tech the closer into a star system you could "jump" Might make those 3rd planet from the sun worlds a prime choice but a 9th planet out even if a class 100 might be a bear to defend
2)Galciv II will use planetary tiles. Ok this I can handle. But what can go in each tile. If each world will be unique, again the massive table for number crunching, make the tiles unique. If you have mouttain ranges make a bonus for mining. Got a fertile plane? Stick a "population center aka city there for economic bonus or a "food site aka farm for more food" This could create some SERIOUS FUN. For a core world you would find many population centers but missle defense would be less since most players would rely on orbitals. For a frontier world bordering a race then you would fill those tiles with defense related items
3)I like the idea of culture borders. Many games uses them effectivly. But another idea is each race is unique. If you invade a world then those aliens there become a thorn. If your evil then into hte furnances with them. But what if your good? Um no slaves allowed . Maybe a migration factor where they just flee the conqured world any way they can. Make for a great game, you gain a planet with 10 billion only to find 4 turns later 8 billion fled, commited suicide, went into rebellon ect
4)And please OH please learn from MOO 3!!! I think this open beta test is very wise, but listen to the beta testers! I want to be one but with the need to work, feed my son and generally live life I often play stand alone turn based as I can pause, save and come back later.
