Ground Combat presentation in GC2

One of the (few) things I felt MoO3 actually did well was its presentation of ground combat. GalCiv's presentation of ground combat almost felt like an afterthought in comparision, and over in a flash (despite the following cinematic proclaiming what a massive undertaking a ground invasion was... )

Things that would be neat to borrow:

* slower, drawn out pace to ground combat - give the player a button to skip it if they like.

* show the planet's surface and the ebb and flow of the 'front' between the two forces (given that the ground is being displayed as part of the new tiled planet development system, this shouldn't be a huge endeavour).

* radio chatter! I loved the atmosphere in MoO3 when you sent your ground forces down to the planet's surface and you could hear the chatter between the officers giving you an outline of how the battle was progressing.

Someone else mentioned in another thread that ground combat could perhaps take several turns to complete - I'm liking this idea for reasons of both enhancing the feeling that a ground invasion of a planet is in fact a massive endeavour, and the extra strategic options this would provide. Do you take those three years to take over the planet and salvage some of the development already there, at the risk of the enemy arriving with reinforcements, or do you just bombard it from orbit, wiping out most of the planets infrastructure, but avoiding a drawn out conflict?

Just some thoughts. Can't wait to get my hands on the beta and watch the game evolve over the twelve months.

romanagement? That is what i think will make people happy, a little bit of change. However, not so much that we end up in a gigantic galaxy managing our forces for hours during one game. You know what i mean?

ets worthwhile. Trained troops would take a while to convert, so that such attacks are possible.

planet down until it was weak enough to invade and win. You know, same as you.

I sometimes employed the slash and burn in MoO2. But I preferred a diverse empire, so I tended to invade with overwhelming force, and assimilate the aliens.
