JoeUser Feedback2

Post problems and suggestions here

Ok, I'm starting a new article for posting comments about JoeUser. So please if you have any problems, suggestions or comments please post them here.

Just to get back up to speed on what we are doing here is some of the stuff we have been working on:

My biggest priority over the last week has been to finish up features that already exist and put on the final polish. One of the most important areas is trying to bring consistancy in naming conventions. An article posted on JoeUser has been called Stories, Articles, Blogs and Posts. I have been going through the code and am trying to be consistent and calling all the individual articles an "Article". I know for me personally I have found many of the links confusing not knowing for sure what a "blog" refers too. So, in the context of JoeUser a Blog is referring to a blog site and an Article is refering to an individual article/post on a Blog site.

Top Sites and Points. We've uncovered some flaws in the way our point system was working and have done some tweaks to correct the problems. So because of this you may have noticed a big shift in the Top Blog Sites list. Over the next few days the list should stablize and provide an accurate account of the most popular Blog Sites over the last 30 days.

On the horizon we are making some changes to the Blog Groups. As it is right now, in order for an article to show up on the Blog Group Site you need to feature an article from one of it's sub sites. This is going to change. The default will be for new articles posted on a sub sub to show up on the Blog Group site. However, the owner of the Blog Group will have the option of choosing which system they wish to use, the "Featured" system or the "Automatic" system. And for Blog Groups we are going to allow the ability to post articles directory to the Group site. So both articles posted directly to the group and articles from the sub sites will show up in the main article list for the group.

Also, we will be adding the ability for you to add "Admins" to your Blog Site or Blog Group.

That's it for now.

Here's a little oddity- if you click on the persons articles at the bottom (like: T-mans articles) it shows multiple pages of articles, but in actuality, they are all shown on one page.

As mentioned before Pat, would it be possible to add more comments information.

It's like using a forum, you want to see which articles have new comments from the top so you can read those comments. At the moment you are only told how many comments an article has, not if it has new comments since your last visit.

It would be nice to see a list of all your comments from your home page. Why? When I look at a users home page I may be interested in seeing what other articles they have been interested in and posted in. It would also be an easy way for you to link to the articles you have been posting in and check to see if any new comments are posted.

Looking very good. I'm finding myself spending far too much time reading articles and posting comments! Netx I'll be trying to compete on a player rank level :-)

Paul.

Some suggestions from me:

1. The "Next Articles" button is kinda hard for people to find. Several people that I've shown my blog to thought I only had like 10 articles. I cant put my finger on exactly why it's hard to notice but I think maybe it just kinds blends in too much.

2. The top is somehow still a little too jumbled/busy. One specific thing I dont like on the top is the horizontal user information meaning "Logout, Articles posted, user rating, My Blog, Post New" etc. I think I'd like it better vertically on the side? Or maybe have it share the space now taken up by the "Channels"?

Something broken. Links don't work from the search engine.

Any link in the search engine gives a url of
www.joeuser.com/index.asp?AID=xxx

where it should be
[username].joeuser.com/index......

And one more suggestion/question. What's up with RSS feeds? For a while they were working but very outdated.....today they dont seem to be working at all "Error Creating RSS Feed".

Is there a time frame to have this stabalized?

My own suggestion is to not auto-generate, but to have them generated on actions. Like if i post/edit to my blog, the site shoudl re-create the RSS at that time. When a new article is featured on the main page....generate. That might get tricky with a channel feed, but you know what Im saying.

can we get an ability to edit comments we make? even if it is like in the galciv forums, where it only works for 15 minutes or whatever? that way i can fix errors i only notice after hitting submit.

can we get a small amount of space to put in images? even 500k would be great or limits on picture size. i hate having to go log onto another website, upload, then come back to paste the url in.

In the RSS feed, can the author be placed in the author field instead of in parentheses in the title? There is also a subject field that could be used for something. Maybe the name of the blog the article was posted on. This would be useful for the main page where articles are shown there from different blogs.

Sorry for my lack of replying but I have been reading your comments.

We will add some of the forum like features to the article lists. They are a little low on the priority list as the moment so I'm not sure when we will get to them.

I will have someone look into the search links.

RSS feeds are working again (or they will the next time you post) if you want to update your rss feed enter the following url: [sitename].joeuser.com/action.asp?cmd=createrssfeed
RSS feeds currently regenerate on the following actions: Add Article, Delete Article, Edit Article, Feature Article

We do plan the ability to be able to upload images but that will be a pay Subscription feature. We will try to add editing ability as soon as possible.

The Author field is for email addresses. At the moment all email address are surpressed for privacy. In the near future we will an option where you can hide/show your email address and real name. When this is implemented we will add it into the RSS feed as well. And there is a category field which we will probably populate with the JoeUser channel data.

When will the Premuim Joe User be ready? I wanted to make a new group but I can't. I already have one but I wanted another one.

Also, how come I can't join other blog groups? I tried to join SD Dev Team but I couldn't. I wanted alerts for when things are posted there that's all.

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a0414'

rs.open("select * From ju_Sites WHERE AccountID = " & Clng(acpAccountID) & " AND IsBlogGroup=0", cnAccount, adOpenForwardOnly)

T-Man, I guess I actually mean the dc:creator tag. I'm looking at the InstaPundit feed and stgstryker's feed and they use that field without putting an email address in it. It would be especially useful on group blogs so you can know who a given article is by. Sgtstryker also uses the dc:subject tag.

Thanks,
Mark

Non email tracking

I like the feature of tracking new comments on articles....however I rarely do it because I dont want to get emails all the time. I think it would be alot nicer if I could have an in-web notifier of tracked articles. Then not only would I be notfied, but it could also clear when I actually visit the article, as opposed to sorting/deleting individual emails.

I've also thougth it would be nice to have my own personal links to blog sites I like to read. I realize I can sort of already do that with custom links, but just thinking here.

Even cooler would be to have a "personal" RSS feed that contains my tracked articles....this would be really cool for my JoeUser DesktopX object (which should be public this weekend).

Ok i'll shut up now :)

I have been looking all over the site for this:

What the heck does those numbers mean on top of the article we post???

"What the heck does those numbers mean on top of the article we post???"

I just got the official word on this the other day.

Home = Number of times your post was viewed by people reading your actual home page (or the main homepage if your article gets featured.

Selected = NUmber of times your article was viewed on a page all by itself, for example clicking on it from the recent articles list.

Channel = Reads from the channel-home pages.

A preview feature for articles you are about to post would be handy. Would help cut down on mistakes and then having to edit after the fact.

Is the track watch list working? Doesn't do anyting for me.

Polls? I love to be able to post a poll in a blog entry.

Would be a good canidate as a premium feature!

It would be interesting to have something on the homepage stating how many blogs/members are on joeuser, how many articles etc - what do you think, good idea, bad idea?
