Now, maybe that story on the memo is a non-issue. I admit I'm not the be all and end all of new news or even spin doctoring. The "Gee, That's Odd," prize goes to the following statement: "We made it very clear that we do not condone torture," McClellan said. "The president would never authorize torture, and that applies to everyone." (italics added: mine.)

Then why bother to even comment on extreme interrogation measure, such as torture? Why make the urging in the first place? If you are so concerned about condoning torture, then why bother trying to edit the bill that would, well, eliminate torture as a process for information extraction? And why not be more specific if you don't mean torture as a method, exacttly of what provisions you wanted changed that may be considered extreme?

Again, maybe it's not really an issue, but it kinda reminds me of the mother finding out her favorite lamp was broken because the kid said before the mother even MENTIONED it, "I didn't break the lamp, honest!" I mean, I'm fully willing to admit that the words 'extreme interrogation measures' are kinda vague, but the dripping water treatment doesn't automatically spring to mind, and neither does the cat of nine. There's a lot that fits under that umbrella.

PS- Does anyone else find it ironic that we're still discussing legality instead of morality of torture? Or is it just me?

To paraphrase MacBeth, "Methinks the adminstration doth protests too much." The admistration may just be jumpy after Gitmo and Abu Gharib, but practically screaming, "I've got nothing to hide!" turns some heads too.

And to coin another cliche or 2, if they had not commented on it, they would have been guilty by quiet assent.

Simply put, they are damned if they do, and damned if they do not.
