For about a week or so I was having some problems with my system. It started with slow performance, and then it would freeze (to the point I had to reboot often)
Last Wednesday I lost use of some of my programs and it would shutdown by it self and I was having problems getting into windows again (I thought it was upset at me or something)
Looking at the uncommon behavior I started to backup all my files [just in case] and last night it went flat line. The main disk fried and died.
The burial services were held at my backyard and the sound of ‘taps’ was played for a brief period.
Anyhow, the good news (for me) is that I managed to save all the important files and I already ordered a new disk.
Bad news is that I gonna have to install everything again [..grrr, that’s gonna take days]
I’m currently using my other machine which is real slow and don’t have any of the programs I had on the main one (sucks)
So I find my self sharing this awful experience with you all as a reminder to make backups of your files because you never know.

Heh, I've just got a 120 gig drive, and I'm gonna start using it and backing up to my old 40 gig.

Ah them easterners do have a flare for the drama. At least ya had a spare puter so ya don't or won't get bored. Just remember, ya wasn't the first and you won't be the last.

Yeah, I've been through 2 dead computers in the last 5 years... (a Gateway and a Dell), now I'm on a custom build super machine!!!

I'm sorry to hear of your loss. I know the feeling all too well... I lost lots of data on my old 120 GB drive. Now, I try to make regular backups. Hope your reinstall goes smoothly.

That is the sad part of having a massive drive size, you can loose massive amounts of Data, quickly.
Lucky you were able to save the core files. Might I make a suggestion....??? Instead of spending alot on a massive drive, as a replacement, get a moderate drive, and invest the remainder of your money, on a dvd burner.
It is very easy to backup 4GB of stuff that way, and Data loss becomes less of an Issue. If you look at the cost, it comes down to roughly $1 US per 4.2 GB. Well that's with not getting Blanks on sale. I picked up $150 at best buy for $60, over the Holidays (using gift cards ). Once you start DVD'ing your files, you find a massive Drive isn't really needed. 40 to 80GB would be quite sufficient, for the average User.

Been there, and it's a pain in the middle of the body somewhere... I was lucky and used my head for once and the back-ups saved the day. Not fun to innstall all the progs etc., but it feels good when it's done. Good to hear you didn't lose anything though.

CygnusXII, that is exactly what I've done and this is a good suggestion for anyone that needs to backup massive data.

BTW, SB and me are both fine, she is a little busy trying to catch up in school since she was off for a long time and she is still trying to find her way around the new site [she doesnt like the new format]

I dont like the new format either. I tend to like my miniature 20 gig drive because it takes less time to do ScanDisk. Its really fast with CheckDisk. It seems to take less time to defrag too.

Sorry to hear about your puter. At least you were able to save your important files.
Another route you might consider, an external HD, have a Buslink myself and it works great. I also back up to DVD as well.

......... Once, in my childhood, buried my father's watch and thought that now there would be Watch Tree and I would sell them so I could be rich. Can you believe that I had waited for solid 2 Months for that tree?

Having crushed and burned my HD's for 8 times in the past,trust me i do know what data loss is all about.I once lost my whole walls gallery totaling around 8000 walls,but i gained most of it back through data mining tools,now i only have the half of it around 4500 walls.I also lost my entire mp3 collection,that was a loss i still weep about,cause it's not everyday that you lose 7000 songs.Well now i learned the art of backing up,i do regular backups of important new files every three months and entire collection backup every year.The bad news is that i've stopped burning down my disks,basically the problem was electricity power being unstable.Now i got a UPS and all moves smoothly,both systems are good to go and fully working. Sorry for your loss,good thing you backed up when you saw the storm coming...Now about the re-installing see it as a patience exercise Breathe and calm (PS:Try and make a Master's DVD,a DVD where you can put all your programs installation files and install from there instead of all that CD in and out of the drive.I did it and it works indeed,it's a time-saver ).
