new version ...no widgets work

Stardock just informed me that there was an update for DesktopX, so I went ahead and let it update (now running 2.40b[a].002). I restarted my computer and now no widgets will load. I get the "DXWidget.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" message. Anyone?

I had the opposite issue, where I updated DX, restarted, and after seeing lack of widgets loading on desktop, I went to the widget directory and double clicked an .exe and promptly received the message that DX was not installed on system - HUH?? I thought.

I then ran the DX executable, which did nothing but place an icon in system tray, so I right-clicked that icon and selected load widget, selected the widget and said OK.

I then got a message indicating that I did not need to have DX running and would I like to unload DX? I said OK and my selected widget loaded. I was then able to return to the widget directory and double click the other 2 widgets that I usually run on desktop (calendar, weather, and digital clock).

Everything is fine now, but it was very strange behaviour to my mind.

Not sure if this helps you in any way though, SD.

No, it doesn't, but thanks anyway. I even tried to re download one of them (Orbital) but when I clicked on the .exe file, I got the smae message.

I just updated too, but I am having no problem. I checked loaded 4-5 different object clocks, caledars, etc. weather and everything was working fine. Something not right here.

Yeah, I know. None of my widgets work. I have it checked to begin DX on startup, but when I restart, that same message pops up. Is there a seasoned and battle scarred wizop around?

SD,

I don't know if you found your solution, but I had a widget disappear after inadvertently clicking on it and it would not reload by double clicking .exe.

I started DX (not usually running) and went to DX config panel and to the widgets tab, where I clicked the "clear widget cache" button and then clicked "view widget cache" and there was the widget folder just hanging out.

I tried to manually delete it and the system indicated it could not be deleted because a program was using it (yeah I did unload DX previous to this step).

After rebooting and having the same problem, I realized that the best thing to do would be to uninstall DX (not including the skins, themes, etc.) and then reboot and manually delete the problem child.

It did indeed work. I was able to manually delete the widget folder from cache, reinstall DX, and load widgets to my heart's content.

Widget cache is in C:\Documents and Settings\"user name"\Local Settings\Application Data\Stardock\DesktopX\WidgetCache (drive letters may vary, and "user name" would be name of account you are using).

I had to go to Tools>Folder Options>View and select "show hidden files and folders to access the cache directory.

Thought this might help yourself or others, I apologize for the long dissertation.

Followed your procedure and came up with the same problem. Thank you very much for the info, though.

Have more or less the same problems. Just posted on OS Customization Channel. (I should dig a little deeper huh?) I'm having trouble loading some, but not all widgets. My Looking Glass Weather Widget (and Object for that matter) either will not load (widget) or once loaded (object) are unuseable. I opted to uninstall DX and reinstall but I am still having problems.

It seems I remeber an article by Frogboy that annouced the release of 2.4 and that in the article it mentioned that some of the previously made widgets would not work with the upgrades made. I know I'm not much help but you may want to email Martin Conroy since he seems to be the script master.

After having updated DX, I tried a limited number of widgets today from the Brewman DogmaX suite.

The calendar is working well but the weather has serious problems (animation is broken and some part of the widgets did not appear).

Can we expect a bug fix on Stardock side or is it a "incomaptible" new feature ??

Thanks for the imput, all. Glad I'm not alone. Right now DX is running in order to hide my icons. Eventually I hope it will do more.

I'm sure they are working on it. I'm running the last beta and progress has been made.

The problem is that you never know if the bugs come from you, the widget or DX.

this is for corky.... i wanna thank you for your solution. it fixed my whiget hangs problem. after a out of blue computer shutdown. manual bootedbackup.... none of the previous running whigets would work anymore... it would start up and hangs there. your solution of clearing the cache fixed it. thanks.

Nice version and an excellent upgrade. It rendered an otherwise fully functioning program into a pile of garbage. Clearing the cache did nothing even objects refuse to load. What a waste. Let me know if you hear anything from stardock command. Wahhhaaaa

You are welcome, glad I could help.

DesktopX 2.4 is a mess

No objects resize from corners, widget list all screwed, program hang-ups and incompatibilities abound

Fix it Stardock

What are you talking about?

Objects dont' resize from corners. They never did.  There is no such thing as a "widget list".

By the way Frogboy - it's probably not the best PR to insult and piss-off your customer base. I'm paying for this software -- I expect it to work. Judging by the number of questions, annoyances, and complaints on these forums, I'd think you and your team would be spending your time coding and fixing rather than telling your customers that they don't know what they are talking about (even if they don't).

mikecro63,

I am running version 2.40.035 and all is well.

The widgets all work, I can load themes and objects which all load and list correctly, and I can create themes.

Are you running the newest alpha 2.40c(a).002 version?

If so, you might have better luck going to SDCentral and uninstalling the current version without selecting "Delete all files including skins, themes and saved games" option. You may be required to reboot to complete operation.

If you then right-click DesktopX in the list and select "Restore archive...", then select the 2.40.035 version from that list, you could install and use it until the (rc) version or official released version of 2.40c.002 is available.

Hope this helps.

Well Mikecro, sorry but you don't know what you're talking about.

Just because some widget authors made their particular widgets resizeable doesn't mean all widgets are resizeable. And just because you purchased a product doesn't give you the right to be rude.

I gotta tell ya Frogboy - you are digging yourself into a hole. I'd like you to tell me exactly how I have been "rude" in pointing out to you some potential flaws in the latest release of DesktopX - a product for which I have so far spent in excess of $50.00 on purchases.

I NEVER said that ALL objects should be resizable -- I pointed out that a few that formerly supported that function no longer did in this build of your software. In your first (highly unprofessional) response here you flat out told everyone that I "didn't know what I was talking about" by saying that objects should resize. In fact you stated that objects NEVER did resize from corners. Obviously, having checked in to it, you have realized that some authors have made widgets that do so. A rather disappointing fact that you didn't even know about this.

And NOW you have the audacity to tell me that I have no right to be "rude" just because some Joe did something with your software that you didn't expect them to. Let's think very carefully about who is being rude.

Here's the bottom line -- you told a customer they didn't know what they were talking about, when in fact YOU were in error about functionality of your software - and THEN you had the nerve to do it AGAIN.

Having purchased software DOES give me the right to register my disgust at the type of customer "support" I am receiving.
