Compressed Folder vs. Non-Compressed Folder

This may have been implemented a while back and I'm just noticing it now
I'm running WinXP Home SP2 NTFS and WindowBlinds 4.40.038....
I have a huge archive of WBSkins that I swap in and out of WB. Normally I do this through the WB Config Dialog using Install Skin from Disk. I have been putting this document together and yesterday, instead of installing a skin the way I normally do it, I went to my archive and clicked directly on the *.wba files I wanted to install. I got the obligatory pop-up and everything is fine. What I noticed was the skins that I installed directly using the *.wba files reside in compressed folders within the WindowBlinds directory and the skins I installed through the WB Config Dialog do not. Other than just making this observation known, since I haven't heard or seen it anywhere else before, I have a few of questions....
1. Is WindowBlinds doing this or is my system doing this?
2. What are the advantages of having the WB Skins in compressed folders, other than space savings?
3. Is there an impact on system performance using a WB Skins that's in a compressed folder?
4. Is there an impact on hthe performance of WB Config and SkinStudio when you browse for a skin other than the normal...more skins you have installed, the longer it takes for these two programs to sort out what's available?
