Icon Change Problems

IconPackager only changes some icons

Heya,

Over the past few days I thought I'd try all those things I'd wanted to do regarding the customising of Windows. I'm proud to say I've bought WindowBlinds, use LogonStudio, BootSkin and now have the evaluation version of IconPackager. However, when using IconPackager with any of the bundled packages or ones download from the [excellent] WinCustomize website only a few icons change, for example the My Music, My Videos, My Pictures change but the standard folder icons, drives and most of the control panel icons remain the same. I've tried rebooting, restarting explorer, and I've ensured that everything - including cursosrs - gets applied when using a icon package. I've tried rebuilding icon caches and the repair icon images functions from within IconPackager, and have unticked, "Only load File Icons for registered file types". I've tried everything I can think of, and your help would be appreciated. Stardock might appreciate it to, as if this problem is fixed they'll get $14.95 off me !

i probably wont be able to help you much since im a newbie to this whole windows customize thing.i recently downloaded windowsblinds wich is great and icon packager wich i just uninstalled.i found icon packager to be full of little bugs and i just got fed up with it.the reason why all of your icons are not changed is probably because the creator of the icons did not make a new icon for each icon that you already posses, sometimes the icon packages you download only skin the icons that already come with windows and not the icons to programs you have installed/downloaded.like winamp for example.before you install icon packager you should follow the instructions exactly.if your current theme is the classic view, the icon package you install will not affect every aspect of your desktop.you need to change the theme before applying it.i hope all of this is right.one more thing i would suggest that you only install icon packager if you intend to KEEP IT.if not then you might be left with some ugly icons that you didnt have to begin with.i cant even get every icon that i used to have before installing this program.other than that the customisation of windows should be highly encouraged.thanks for listening, and i LOVE THIS SITE!.

lithiumfx,

I have not used the trial version, so I don't know if it is limited in this way, but I doubt it.

I would try the following:

Open IconPackager configuration panel, and go to "Tools>Restore all icons", then click "OK". Now uninstall IconPackager, reboot the machine, and delete any "IconPackager" folder left in the "C:\Program Files\Stardock" folder.

Then reinstall IconPackager, and reboot. This is to get you back to the default settings and install location for IconPackager.

Start IconPackager and click the "Packages" icon on the top left of configuration panel. Now on the right side of panel, there should be a list titled "Include". Make sure all items are selected with the exception of "cursors" (so - Desktop, Start, Folders, Drives, Others, Files, Custom Files).

Now select a package that came with the program from the list (or one to your liking), and click "Preview" button below the list. This will open up another window with a series of buttons that match all the options in the "Include" list from above and a preview window to the right of these buttons.

Clicking these buttons will show you which icons will be modified by the package.

If you like the package, click "Load", then "Apply" and wait about 30 seconds or so for the program to change the icons.

You should now have a nice set of icons to look at in the Start Menu, My Documents, My Computer folders, along with any other icons included in the pack.

This should work if you are running XP.

Hope this helps.

Whenever I download a file.. It will show up in the list of things, but when i hit preview, it shows nothing, and when i hit ok or apply, it still does nothing.. Is there some way to extract the files to make a folder like the things in the theme file?

I would start by going to the Icon Packager directory: "C:\Program Files\Stardock\Object Desktop\IconPackager\Themes" - ("C:\Program Files\Stardock\IconPackager\Themes" if you don't have the full ObjectDesktop suite), after download and see if the Icon Package was written to the directory.

If the download link automatically starts downloading the file without asking whether you want to "Open, Save, or Cancel", then the files should be in this directory (folder) with the Icon Package name (perhaps along with some %20 symbols between words).

Open the Icon Packager folder and see if there is an "IconPackager" icon inside, if so - double click to apply. This should apply the package, and make the selections available through the IconPackager Dialog.

If there is nothing in the folder, then post back here and someone more advanced than myself should be able to help (I don't know a ton about possible download issues relative to these programs).

I hope this helps or narrows the search for a solution in some positive way.
