Media Players - What Do You Use and Why

My Favorite Features of WMP 10

Note: This author has never used any Media Player other than Windows Media Player and welcomes comments from winAMP users to show what your favorite features are in that software.

My Favorite Features of Window Media Player 10:

- Organize the media content and build a wide variety of playlists on your PC -
I have 244 hours of music from my CD collection using 19.63MB...don't know if that is a lot or not ...that I have been able to easily manage with the built-in playlists and playlists I've created myself.

- Play, rip and burn CD's -
Every new CD I buy gets added to my collection on my PC just by popping it into my CD-ROM and WMP gets the details off the net.

- Windows Taskbar Toolbar support -
One of the best features...WMP can minimize to a useable player right on my taskbar.

- Skinning support -
There are many great skins out there. Many of which come from The Skin Factory available right here at WinCustomize.

- Synchronize your media with portable devices -
I don't have a portable music player, but my wife does and she really enjoys this.

Features I Don't Use, But Are Available in Windows Media Player 10

- Purchase and download music from Online Stores -
I prefer to purchase CD's and use a Music Service to make my purchases.

- Listen to online radio -
Another feature that I don't use mainly because I'm on dial-up and can't afford losing bandwidth while I'm browsing.

i also use quintessential. i used to use winamp, but quintessential is faster than winamp(even 2.x), skinnable like winamp(even 5.x), and on top of that it is compatible with all winamp plugins

Still use Winamp. I'm using 5 now because of the freeform skins, but I started using it back when it was just 2.something
Probably 95% of my usage is just to listen to music. I don't go for all the other features and I use Coolplayer with a MP3 plugin for ripping CDs.

There are some pretty good media players out there, and in all reality they all have something special that makes them unique. I use iTunes and Media Player 10. For those of you who have an iPod (as I do) there is a program (shareware) called xPlay out there that is great for working with the iPod (allows music transfers without being on the original computer).

As to music I have a SATA 160 Gig drive that has over 110 gigs of music (a great deal of these have been convert to mp3 format from reconds and tapes bought over some forty-five years). The program that I now use to originize all of this is WMP 10. But, I use a cataloging program to keep track of all my music (MPEG Auto Collection (MAC) 2.82 a freeware application)).

For those of you who buy music on line through one of the online services there are programs out there that can be used to re-record that music so you can put it in the format you most desire. The same one I used to do my records and tapes is the same one I used to record music off of another music player that will not allow drag and drop transfers unless it is from the original computer. You can fine these programs for both the Mac and PC; not sure of Linux.

I use WMP 10 or iTunes primary becasue I feel they put out a better sound. Winamp seems to break up a bit. I tried Quintessential Player but haven't really gotten into as I have iTunes, and WMP10

Enjoy your music - Pam

Um....that'd be like 'now' ...as technically 2.9x is still 'current'

Okay, to clarify then *pokes Jafo*, I exclusively used Winamp back when 2.9 was the most recent and up-to-date version. 3 lost me entirely, and that was when my media player wanderlust set in, which now seems to have settled with foobar2000.

Since I went to a media center pc a couple of years ago I have tried WMP v8 thru 10, Musicmatch and iTunes. iTunes is my personal fav. 'Bout to purchase a 300 gig external drive to put the rest of the collection on since i 'bout filled up the 120 with mp3's. Yes, they are all legit. iTunes is the easiest to work with and build playlists. It is fast and the burns are great. Never had a problem with it. No charge.

Developer BlueDev yes, me too.  The buggy-ness of V3 put me off going beyond 2.9x ...so much so that I chose to ignore V5 as well.  If I wanted free-form skinning in a media player I'd just go back to their 'origins'....KJofol...

I sing in the shower, but my puter is not waterproof, so when in use: Winamp

I first started with Winamp 2.x, actually the second reason for me to begin skinning. And I've used that ever since. It was fast, there were lots of skins and lots of options. WA3 wasn't that bad, but still slow. Then they added the best of 2.x and 3 and released WA5. Mmmm, just perfect. If I wanted it fast I could use 2.x skins and if I wanted some eye candy I could use a modern skin. Plus support of ripping your CD's. Easy to configure and make playlists. Something I've always hated with WMP. I only use that for video. Maybe because I never wanted to sit down and explore the possibillities of WMP, but I think that has something to do with me getting used to use Winamp

Oh Yeah, iTunes is supposed to be used on a Mac

I use WMP10, but thats mainly because when I use my skins, the memory footprint is pretty small. Believe it or not, I can get it down around 5-6 meg, and thats with my 700 song playlist loaded. My main reason for using it though, is because I skin it.

WMP 10 does all i need

Now that I think about it, I use MMJB to rip CD's. I did use WinAMP to do that ONLY because I wanted to save the files as ACC (the one that iTunes uses) because I wanted to get an iPod... funny thing is that I don;t know if iPod will even play them (never did the research, just assumed)

so MMBJ to rip, WinAMP to play. WMP doesn't get much use unless I want to use a specific skin. then I eventually go back to WinAMP

Why?
MM3D skin for WinAMP (there are others, but that one ALWAYS makes me come back)

foobar. It's not skinnable *shock*, it looks very basic *horror*, but it's light-weight, has a great playlist, is oh so flexible and does almost exactly what I want.

I don't need to see my player, I just want to hear it and control it via hotkeys.
Well, maybe if the foobar guys get an API together you can have a shiny little desktop widget to control it as well.

WMP 10, it's free and does everything I need

Although I am really interested in DXPlayer

or even a Denon with Wharfedale's

DesignCaddy: while i can't help you make the iPod run with WMP i can tell you a little trick so you can use the songs you purchased any way you like. Which is your right. Burn a cd with the songs you bought from the iTunes music store. Once they are on the cd they become the CD's format. All you have to do is play the cd and rip the songs off as mp3s or WMAs using WMP. It's ridiculous to think Apple has any right to tell you or to force you to use their player after you paid for the music.

TSF: Why? They have the rights to say what you do with the content, because those are the conditions under which you get to use the music. That's what you paid for. You didn't pay to be able to listen to it in WMP. If you don't like their conditions, don't buy the music from them. And if it's not available from anyone else, complain to the other people selling music tracks. And if they say the music labels won't let them (chances are that's the source of the restriction, as Apple certainly don't seem to have subsidised the player), complain to them. And if they don't care, complain to the musicians they represent. And if that doesn't work, start listening to something else.

If I use the media player instead of my stereo or tv, I generally use WMP10 because it just works.

If I make a screenshot I generally use Winamp because the skins are much more fun.

I burn data files with XP's built-in packet writing feature.

Music and Video burning is given to Nero 6 all the way.

I use classic winamp 2.91 for mp3s, and usually Zoomplayer for media (it's small and compact and just about all I need), but there aren't many nice skins for it. I just updated to WMP 10 and I have a few really nice skins for that so I've been using it recently.

I mentioned that I used Winamp, but I use Sonicstage that came with my Vaio, to rip. WMP for Vids.

Guys Guys, If your looking for a player that dosnt use ANY resourses and it will play everything with the correct codec's then Coolplayer is your BEST bet. sure it dosnt do anything like Rip CD's or burn them, but it does play any format and does NOT use any CPU. It is very reliable and hardly ever crashes. ive only had it crash twice on me in the past year!. So in summery, Coolplayer a1 teh w4y!

I don't really use any one media player - I hop around between Windows Media Player 10, Winamp 5 (gotta love a skinable app), JetAudio 6, and iTunes. What I don't use is anything that comes with my soundcards (they're usually crap). I've played around with most of the others, but I don't think that I've found one solution that fits every occasion. It's funny how the same music can sound different with using different players.

I would love iTunes, but the more I hear about it, the more I probably won't get to use it. I would like to be able to have a MP3 player play my files, then also play on my computer. It sounds like I would be trapped once I start buying music from them to play only on iPod or with iTunes.

that's iWack.
