Help, please. Unable to adapt themes as in the past.

Before the DX update I have always been able to take different components of whichever theme I was using and adapt them through a graphic program, such as photoshop. I can no longer do that. Something will not allow me to separate the parts of the themes as I did in the past. Has that ability been locked or is it just something that hasn't been addressed in the new set up. Before, whatever theme was active would have its buttons, frames, etc accessible individually. I have this in configurable mode, not standard and as I said have been doing this from day one, so what has changed?
