NBC Delivers Upbeat Portrait of Americans
Moving to Canada

NBC on Friday night delivered a positive portrayal of U.S. citizens so upset by President Bush's re-election that they've moved to Canada. Reporter George Lewis highlighted how one woman "says Canada is more in tune with her liberal views than the USA." She then touted how Canada has "gun control and universal health care and no death penalty." Lewis trumpeted: "She's not alone. In Bellingham, Washington, Charles Key, a Vietnam veteran, is planning his move to Canada." Key claimed that America no longer stands "for freedom and diversity and tolerance." Without any regard for how the "pursuit of happiness" was declared in the Declaration of Independence for the USA, not Canada, Lewis relayed how the woman insisted that "all of us are entitled to the pursuit of happiness." She declared "I found my dreams in Canada" before Lewis jovially concluded: "And as she spots a bald eagle, she jokes that even America's national bird is taking a serious look at Canada."

Anchor Brian Williams set up the December 10 NBC Nightly News report: "NBC News 'In Depth' tonight. After the hard-fought election this nation has now been through, after the victory for President Bush and the red states, a lot of those on the losing end, the bluest of the blue, find life so unbearable they've made the ultimate decision: To leave. While neighbors wish them good riddance, they say they're going to a place they're welcome. NBC News 'In Depth' tonight: Here is George Lewis."

Lewis began, as checked against the closed-captioning by the MRC's Brad Wilmouth: "Lorraine Wright, originally from California, has pulled up anchor and headed to Canada. Do you think you'll spend the rest of your years here?"
Lorraine Wright, at a marina: "Absolutely."
Lewis: "As a Canadian citizen?"
Wright: "Absolutely."
Lewis: "Wright, who runs a hotel and tour company on Quadra Island, British Columbia, says Canada is more in tune with her liberal views than the USA."
Wright: "You know, they have gun control and universal health care and no death penalty."
Lewis: "She's not alone. In Bellingham, Washington, Charles Key, a Vietnam veteran, is planning his move to Canada."
Charles Key: "America no longer reflects my political and social values."
Lewis: "Spoken by a man whose ancestor, Francis Scott Key, wrote this:"
Clip of artist singing: "-the land of the free-"
Key: "'The land of the free and the home of the brave' to me always meant that America was supposed to stand for freedom and diversity and tolerance. And I don't think that it does anymore."
Lewis, at a border crossing: "So far Canadian officials say they haven't seen any huge exodus of Americans moving to Canada, but they do note that since the U.S. election thousands of Americans have been checking out the Canadian official immigration Web site. And in the last week, more than 300 people in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Francisco paid $25 apiece to attend seminars hosted by Canadian immigration lawyer Rudolph Kischer."
Rudolph Kischer, immigration lawyer: "Bush has been great for business."
Unidentified man: "Good riddance."
Lewis: "On a show televised in Canada, Charles Key noted there are plenty of Americans who think the idea of moving North is plain stupid."
Key on the TV show in Canada: "And it's reflected in words like 'good riddance' and 'don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out.'"
Lewis: "Lorraine Wright says some may think of expats like her as traitors, but says all of us are entitled to the pursuit of happiness."
Wright: "I found my dreams in Canada."
Lewis concluded: "And as she spots a bald eagle, she jokes that even America's national bird is taking a serious look at Canada. George Lewis, NBC News, Quadra Island, British Columbia."

drmiler, the only thing I would add is that these bums ought never be permitted to return here -- even for purposes of shopping, i.e., that more than 90% of Candians weekly cross the border in order to get necessary goods & services.

I'm a New yorker, who voted for bush, and am by no means religious.

Sorry, Jesusland is not here. Canada can have all the quitters, but the US will go on withpeople who can lose once in a while and bounce back stronger.

But I doubt Canada wants them. No country wants quitters. They are just leeches on society.

Sure they (a country that is) do. Canada did it back in the 60's and 70's, and they're doing it again now. Back in the 60's and 70's, it was the anti-Vietnam draft-dodging crowd. Now it's a new generation that is leaving for similar reasons (unhappy about what our government is doing).

Let them shop. Let them be hypocritics that spend their money supporting the vast industrial complex in this country. Shopping isn't an issue, nor is letting them have medicines, foods and other goods that are created here.

Let them not, however, send products back to the U.S. Consumers need to wise up, and stop spending money buying "North American" content cars that are made of parts made in Mexico and assembled in Canada (made by a bunch of "quitters" that left this country to go there). Stop buying (and I do see this stuff on the shelf) frozen foods made in Canada (even if the foods include materials grown/farmed here in the U.S.).

And finally, STOP these people from voting in this country. If they leave, strip away their citizenship, their right to vote, and their right to benefits they may have earned in this country (social security or other retirement benefits). Again, take away their citizenship and leave them to become citizens of their new home.

Incorrect. No one is saying that. The quitters are just that, quitters. No one has said or is saying love it or leave it. We are saying if you dont want to stay and work for a better America, then Good Riddance. That has no bearing on those who disagree with Bush and are going to stay and fight.

Incorrect, many are saying that. I have often read here that if you don't like things the way they are then go to Canada. I have heard the attorney general call those who disagree with the President to be traitors. I have heard the Vice President guarantee that if the opposition would come to power that another terrorist attack was imminent. If you can't agree with the President, you must be condemning the nation.

Are you really saying that you missed on the news when Ashcroft called war protesters traitors? Did you really miss Dick Cheney say that only if he and Dubyah are reelected can another 9/11 be avoided. You don't need a link, you need to pay attention more.

Who said that? This thread's about how some people are leaving the US because they support diversity, freedom, and tolerance so much, that if the US is diverse with many political beliefs, tolerant of beliefs opposing theirs, and full of freedom to practice such belief, they whine and leave.

That is not germaine to your accusation. When did either say 'love it or leave it'? Never. And anyone can voice an opinion. Ashcroft and his traitor one is his opinion based upon the fact we are at war, that we did not start. Cheney was voicing his (IMHO) correct opinion that he and GW were better equipped to handle the war on terror. While you may disagree with both statements, you cannot say they are telling anyone to leave! That is the height of illogic! There is not even an a=b=c stretch of the imagination!

I dont need to pay more attention, you need to quit assuming that any statement that does not fit your stereotype is a call for deportation or exodus. Or at the very least, learn some logic.

Didn't Bush even say "you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists"? I believe he did. This is only different to "love it or leave it" in words, not in intent/meaning. Your strict literal interpretion is interesting, I don't think that was what the writer intended.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Canada is a friendly nation, and it should be the RIGHT of all individuals to choose where they wish to live. If Canada offers the amenities they desire, I wish them the best.

You can disagree all you want! They want to live in Canada that also is fine. If they're leaving the US because they're pissed over who won the election and don't want to stay and help fix the problem? Then the hell with them. They *should* lose their citizenship.

I'll just chime in on the issue with this...

I have always maintained that it is just as constitutional to protest any war as to fight in it; the same goes for protesting any other action of our government. Freedom works both ways. If people feel that they would be more at home in Canada, Germany, France, Zimbabwe, Iraq, or anywhere else, by all means, they should pursue their happiness.

People move out of the US everyday, people also move back everyday, there is nothing noble, special or cowardly about it, they are merely exercising their freedoms. The only difference between those and the people who are moving out of protest, is the press has overblown your gesture. Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame, for there won't be very many 15s when either the press or the people who stayed in the US care about why you left.

Also a final note... When you get to where you're going, remember that your new neighbors care even less about why you moved there than we care why you left. If all you are going to do is bore them with tales of how much it sucks in America, I'm sure you will fail to find happiness there just as you failed to find it here. If your happiness is so dependent on whose butt fills the big chair in the oval office, my bet is, it won't matter where you are, you won't be as happy as you thought you ought to be.
