DesktopX and Zombies

We're listening..

So Deadzombie has some ideas on how DesktopX should be done.  We're listening.

First off, we've cleaned up the main UI. It's a lot easier to understand what DesktopX is about.

Secondly, widgets are now much more configurable. We're only at the start of that journey that will go into future DesktopX versions as well. The feedback we're getting is pretty positive from beta testers so we hope this will put us on "the path".

Let us know what you think. If you have Object Desktop, you can get the latest version of DesktopX via Stardock Central. If you don't have it, get Object Desktop at http://www.objectdesktop.com or you can get DesktopX on its own at http://www.desktopx.net (only the reigstered version has been updated to the latest beta).

The one feature I would like to see is graphical labels built in. Right-click an object, select "Add Label", edit the fonts, colors, select a graphic from my drive...and voila. Something to that effet anyway, perhaps even as a plugin. Speaking of plug-ins...I would REALLY like to see some updates to the existing plugins, they are the easiest way for someone to make a widget that does something, without actually having to write a script. I like the new beta, Stardock is doing great things with DX.

I'm glad to see the ease of use issues getting some work!

Well, the DXPlayer widget has had major overhauls, it now does iTunes and has better Winamp support, and even uses WMP internally so you don't need a media player (read more). That sort of thing is getting more attention, believe me.

I agree with Hus. I like having labels on some of my objects, but I don't like to go through a bunch of menus just to do that.

I also am impressed with the improvements that have come. I really like DesktopX, but I think it would get even more popular if it were a little more simpler to use for some people.

Thanks for all the work.

Hus has hit a nail right on the head. The ability to easily add and configure labels should be native to each object/widget. That would be great. I know you can already have a label to some degree, but streamlining and making that more powerful would be fantastic. I love the improvements and am really impressed at how much of the users input you have been listening to.

Hey Folks;

Just installed the 2.39[b].002 and have noticed that when I try to load my theme that worked fine with the beta before this one now say's theme was built with a later version of DesktopX "do you want to continue loading". Naturally I did continue loading and all is fine except it woulld not show the background image I was using. I edited my WindowBlinds skin to handle that one, but here seems to be a version glitch there somewhere.

Also the lable idea is a good one, and one thing I would like to see is when you use the "Graphical Performance Meter" and use a graphic to represent a drive that is usb or Ipod or anything that is removeable, you will notice that when you remove the drive or Ipod from the system the graphic will show as full instead of nothing there at all. Think that one would be a nice fix. With all the plug in drives out there It's nice to see them plugged in and unplugged which would eith show the space used with the graphic or show nothing when unplugged.

Any comments on these areas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks

I am working on a new theme, and im finding that moving items around that are LINKED to others (IE: Child items), doesnt work.

Ie: I have a circle background that is the main object for several weather items on it, i cant just grab and drag the weather items, i have to go thru this long involved procedure of moving it via the properties dialog, and its a real pain. Also, im not sure you could make a easy group command to allow me to put a few items into a group, move them as one item, then ungroup them?

Im new to all this, and im trying hard to learn.

I think DesktopX is really great, i just need to figure it all out.

One more thing I'd really appreciate to have, when you right-click on an object, a context menu listing all the objects associated in that group, and bring up it's properties when clicked. Going through the Object Navigator can get tedious at times when tweaking things, it would just make it a bit faster.

Mr K. Yeppers. Been done for a while. Here is my personal version: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/5436280/

Everything works, but I had to jury-rig the taskbar object to be colorizeable, and it screws with taskbar notifications. Or rather taskbar notifications screw with it....

And always adding new tweaks and features... I should just release it and then update it as I go, eh?

Oh, a fix please : Stop moving objects with taskbar at the top of the screen.

New 2.4 has flickering objects when running a Movie in Nero Showtime.

Chadamus, why can't you just use script to change hue of a custom taskbar?
