Issue when switching virtual desktops

Icons do not retain in fence

Windows 11 24H2

Fences Version: 6.46

Issue:

Desktop shortcuts intermittently lose their fence membership and appear on the general desktop outside any fence.

Observations:

  • Desktop path is local (C:\Users\xxxxxxx\Desktop)

  • OneDrive is not connected or syncing the desktop

  • Fences Rules are disabled

  • Pages are disabled

  • Fences has been completely uninstalled and reinstalled

  • Restarting Windows Explorer does not reproduce the issue

  • Restoring a Fences snapshot restores the icons to their correct fences

Potential trigger:

I use multiple Windows 11 Virtual Desktops.

When testing:

  1. Create a new shortcut on Desktop 1.

  2. Place the shortcut into a fence.

  3. Switch to another Windows Virtual Desktop.

Result:

  • The fence remains visible.

  • The new shortcut is no longer present within the fence.

  • Other affected icons may appear loose on the desktop outside fences.

  • Returning to the original desktop may show different icon membership than other desktops.

This suggests fence membership is becoming inconsistent across Windows Virtual Desktops while the fence objects themselves remain visible.

Please advise whether there are known issues with Fences 6.46 and Windows 11 Virtual Desktops or any logging options that would help diagnose this behaviour.

Thanks

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having issues. I can't reproduce your issue on my system. REfer my short video below.

Moving forward, to make sure Fences get install properly, please try, uninstall Fences, reboot immediately (important), download latest version available in your account product download page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products. Install it, reboot immediately again. Retest it and report back.

If the issue still appear, we need few more details.

  1. Windows 11 24H2 OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe.
  2. Any specific reason for you not updating to latest Win 11 25H2 version?
  3. You mentioned the issue intermittently happen, any specific steps that you need to do to force the issue?
  4. Do you have multimonitor setups?
  5. Any other details that might help understand the issue better.

Thank you,

Basj,

Stardock Community  Assistant.

Hi, to add to the questions above, yes debug logs might also help. You’ll have to enable advanced logging and reproduce, but upon doing so and describing what happened, it should help.

(1) “Enable advanced logging” from Troubleshooting menu in About

(2) Reboot or log off/on

(3) Reproduce

(4) “Create error report package” from Troubleshooting menu, and describe one or more icons that moved in the space provided or back here.

Thank you!

Hi, we received your log but are not seeing the issue.

Is there a name of a specific icon that fell out a group during the change?

If none happened during this capture, with Advanced Logging still on, reproduce and let us know what icon to look for in the logs. It should be pretty explicit that the icon has exited the group in the log, so we're hoping to see it!

Let us know if this should already appear.
