custom icons for saved groups

Countless time I have changed my shortcut link to different saved groups to have a custom icon on the start 11 enhanced taskbar.
Sometimes it lasts for a couple days, sometimes for 5 minutes but for some peculiar reason the icon changes to the saved group default (an ugly amalgam of the various apps in the group). Very frustrating, But why????
