Fences 6 Bug: Desktop Folder Rename Also Renames Icon Inside Fence Tab

Fences 6 Bug: Desktop Folder Rename Also Renames Icon Inside Fence Tab

Reproducible Renaming Bug in Fences 6 – Needs Review

I’m experiencing what appears to be a bug in Fences 6 and wanted to report it for review.

When I create a new folder on the Windows desktop and immediately rename it, an icon inside one of my Fences tabs also changes its name to match the new folder name. The icon inside the Fence is unrelated to the new folder and should not be affected.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Right‑click desktop → New → Folder
  2. Immediately type a name for the new folder
  3. After the folder is created, open my Fence tab
  4. An existing icon inside the tab has been renamed to the same name I gave the new folder

This issue happens frequently. I have not found any settings that would cause this behavior, and I have not seen this issue documented in the Fences 6 troubleshooting resources.

Could you please advise whether this is a known issue, and if there is a fix or workaround?

Thank you for your help.

Today it renamed the scanner folder 2001 (2) and something else 2001 (3). I had just made a normal folder of jpegs for 2001 not in a fence, just on the desktop. I did have the scanner on, but the fence was not "open", neither was it for the other thing.

I am not really clear what you mean by that, perhaps a video showing what you did would explain it better.

Thank you,

Hi Elizabeth,

Was this "Scanner Folder 2001" inside a Fence group, and it got renamed while hidden? Was this group rolled up or otherwise scrolled off screen? It sounds like multiple things got renamed?

What triggered the action, do you know? Was it "Create New Folder" and then renaming that new folder, or just a rename of an existing file/folder?

Thanks for the information

The "scanner related" folder was in a rolled up, closed? fence but the scanner app was open on my desktop at the time the folder was renamed. What triggered it was making a create new folder on the desktop, not in a fence, and then naming it for the first time "2001". Somehow that renamed two folders inside two different fences, the scanner related and something else I don't think was even open but I can't remember what that one was. It is not the first time, but I think it involves the scanner folder every time. I don't get this at all.

Got it. Yikes.

Ok. This is note good, so we'll get looking at this. "Create new folder" → rename causing issues is something we've heard before, but believed was resolved.

Hopefully Control+Z helped undo. Let us know if you're able to reproduce.

thank you, it could always be some other app or update causing this but when I googled the problem I found the same issue on the fences forum. I really enjoy using the fences to clean up my desktop, it's a really nice app.

We have noted improvements on this issue since it was reported, and I'm finding myself unable to reproduce it with the current release.

If anyone here is still experiencing trouble where the icons are renaming, if possible, can you please:

  • Confirm your Fences version ('About' tab of the Fences app, check for updates to make sure it's the latest).
    • (Reboot after any update completes).
  • Provide your full Windows version (Run winver.exe for exact build please).
  • If possible, a test on Windows Sandbox without other conflicts to see if it reproduces there:
  • A video upload of the issue, to help us understand and reproduce your conditions as closely as possible.

Thanks again and best regards,
