Fences 6 will not open after update / re-install / purge etc.

Hi,

I recently updated from Fences 3 to Fences 6. But now the configuration won't show up. Did lot of steps to get rid of this, but nothing helped.

Previous fences from Fences 3 show up, will expand, can be renamed and right-click menu is working. But some are at the wrong position and I cannot move them ...

Even Fences is not shown in task-manager as a running process. Autostart for both entries is activated as suggested in your FAQ.

  • Did Re-install
  • Did purge and reinstall (which still did not delete all of my previous settings)
  • Did lot of rebooting

Still not able to open Fences 6 main window and any settings.

Read something about "If Shell-Menu is changed, Fences won't show up" (see https://forums.stardock.com/517746/page/1/#3883204) but I did not change anything by myself in the shell menu.

Software Version:

  • Fences 6 (6.2.0.1)
  • Windows 11 26200.7462 as a member of an active directory (but do have access to administrator rights)

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. As a test, please install in Windows Sandbox and see if the issue also appear while in there: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1416560645/Testing+Fences+in+Sandbox. Try it and report back.

Hi Banj,

thanks for your reply. Yes in windows sandbox Fences works fine.

That show something within your current setup is not working properly, would like suggest to do a clean boot test: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1332445272/Fences+Clean+Boot. Clean boot need to be done with care. Try it and report back.

Hi Banj,

once again thanks for your quick reply.

But no, I won't do such a big change to the system. Because when re-installing Fences v.3 everything works fine again. So ist must be an error to your software, not my system.

I think I will ask for a refund since your software is not working as suspected.

That's a pity but not your personal fault of course.

See you.

Understandable, but do know that Fences 6 was released for sometime already, and if its a bug or an error with the Fences 6, it should have been reported by other users.

One thing I have forgotten to asked you to check is this: https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1331232868/Fences+is+not+starting+after+boot. Perhaps Fences 6 was not starting up properly.

Hi Basj,

as written in opening post:

Well ... it is:

Read something about "If Shell-Menu is changed, Fences won't show up" (see https://forums.stardock.com/517746/page/1/#3883204) but I did not change anything by myself in the shell menu.

Huh, I missed that part. So can't you just change back the menu to default Windows version? Since Fences need to work with default Windows environment.

Or, perhaps trying to open Fences via Start panel? Doesn't that still work?

Well, unfortunately I did no changes by myself. We have Powertoys and 7zip installed. Both will add entries to shell menue. Nothing I could control.

Stardock 6 will definitely not start. No matter which way I try to start.

I am sorry, I have PowerToys, but I have no such issue. What module you have turn on in PowerToys?

Also, not sure about, shell menu. But, I was referring to Context menu. The menu that popup if you right click on your desktop area. Shell menu usually point to your Start menu, no?

As an add on reply. I just retested that "Changed Context menu" link you posted above (back in 2023 with Fences v4). https://forums.stardock.com/517746/get;3883204.

I just confirmed that it still work on changed context menu. I used Winaero Tweaker to change my context menu to classic full context menus. And Fences 6 still launch without issue. Refer my short video below.
