Creating Start Button graphic leveraging windows highlight color?

How does one create a Start Button graphic leveraging windows highlight color? (such as is used in the Windows dynamic theme personalisation of assignable highlight colour? ms-settings:colors )
What are the channels/colors/image depths/formats needed to effect this?

Both the built in 'Start 11' icon and the 'Default' do this, unfortunately they do seem to be 'built in' as they don't have any artwork in the 'StartButtons' folder.  Ideally actually I'd go for those, but unfortunately default is a little small
(and the proportions of that particular rendition of the Start 11 icon are are a little.... well... phallic frankly - hey, I said proportions not dimensions! Three frame animate that one! ;) )

There are three sizes of the Default Start button; small, medium, and large. You will need to click the "Pick image" button on the Start button tab in order to access them. However, there is only one size for the Start11 logo button. The color of the top, left square on the Default button and the background of the Open state are determined by the Start11 menu color.

I'm not sure how to create a new button which uses the chosen Start11 menu color, but would be interested in how it's done. It's probably built into the software code.
