Icons are misplaced after reboot

Hello! I am a fairly new user with Fences and everything was working fine until recently. It seems to be that when I reboot my computer, every icon after a certain point, of which I don't know, will be removed from the fences and thrown across my desktop. I've spent a few days browsing the internet for answers, but not many people seem to have the same problem, or fixes worked for them and not for me. I tried to restore snapshots, even made new ones and nothing fixes the issue. I even recently made a new fence to just throw every icon into that wouldn't stay because I figured it could be an issue with older fences, and upon rebooting my computer, the fence was deleted and the icons were thrown around again. It's even stranger, because it is only affecting new icons of the last 2-3 months, besides Google Chrome, which has been there since day one of using Fences. Any and all help is appreciated!

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need more details on your system.

  1. Windows 10 or 11? Also need its full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe.
  2. Fences full version number installed.
  3. Do you have OneDrive Desktop sync turn on?

Thank you,

First, need to know Groupy get install properly. Please try, uninstall Groupy, reboot immediately (important), download latest version available in your account product download page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products. Install it, reboot immediately again. Retest it and report back.

I do not have Groupy installed as I never knew about it until now. Is it required for Fences 6 to run?

I am really sorry, I get confused. Please try the same steps, but instead of Groupy, try the same steps for Fences. Do that and report back.

I uninstalled Fences 6, rebooted, reinstalled Fences 6, rebooted and the problem is still persisting.

The issue is still continuing to happen. Any word on what the problem could be and a fix for it?

Try this, when the issue appear, rearrange all the icons back into their specific Fences and save the layout, give it a specific name. And when the issue reappear. Try do the layout restore using the one you saved, does all the icons return back to their designated Fences. Try that and report back.

If you are talking about making a backup with the layout, I have already tried this multiple times, it never works.

Great, next, turn on Enable advance logging. Refer screenshot below. Rearrange the icons again. Save again. Reboot again. And see the icons get rearranged itself. Click on Create error report package. Follow the steps mentioned in it to send in the report. Also mentioned this thread so Support or Dev can refer to it. Report here once you have send in the report.

Hello again, here a few steps Dev need you to do to help him to look into your issue with more details. While "Enable Advanced logging" still active.

  1. Reset all the icons back into the correct Fences.
  2. Taking a backup before rebooting
  3. Clicking on that backup and renaming it to "before reboot" (there's a Rename link when the backup pulls up)
  4. Taking another backup after rebooting
  5. Renaming that backup to "after reboot"
  6. Send in a new report

Alright, I did as requested. There is now an icon missing, but that's no big deal. Hopefully this can be resolved.

Hi Gbonne, good news! Not sure how you got into this state, but it seems like a setting "AdjustGroupsForResolution" in your settings got set to 0.

You can resolve this by, on the layout tab, clicking one of the other options ("Preserve my layout...") and then going back to "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration basis". Change the setting, then you may need to log off and log back on, but after that, everything should work & save as expected. (If somehow not, please send another log and we'll continue to look, but this looks like it!)

We've also adjusted future copies of the program to look out for this for other users so this doesn't happen again.

Thanks for your patience and please let us know

It worked! I'm not sure how that could have changed either. Apologies for the late reply, I had to send my laptop into a repair shop. I appreciate all of the help and the quick replies!
