Start11 Icons Missing

Folder menu icons missing

Start11 v2.53 Business edition, Windows 11 Pro / 24H2 / 26100.6584

Added a folder to the taskbar with "Taskbar pins" -> "Pin folder menu".

Some icons missing from pinned folder.  When the pinned folder is viewed with Windows Explorer, all icons are present.

Is there a fix for this?

Tried restarting Windows Explorer and rebooting the computer.

Do you mean some files and folders are missing, or that their icons are missing?

A screenshot would be helpful here if possible.

It is the icons that are missing.  That is, they are not specific to the file.

Update:

[1] Most of the missing icons represent Windows Explorer shortcuts, i.e. ".lnk" files.  If I select an item with a bad icon and then use the dialog to fix the icon, the item seems to be repaired.  (There is one however that I cannot fix in this manner.)

[2] With the exception of the one unrepairable item mentioned in [1], the other files whose icons were wrong were Windows symbolic links, i.e. "symlink"s.  If I replace the symlinks with Explorer shortcuts, the icons return.  It would seem that Start11 cannot handle Windows symlinks.

Conclusion:

Start11 [a] should have a way to repair its icon cache and [b] it should be able to handle symbolic links.

We use the OS icon cache hence not having a rebuild option.  The OS maintains caches per size so this can cause things to look correct when viewing a folder but then look wrong in the menu due to different icon sizes being asked for.

The folder menus actually reload icons from the OS cache on each open.

A symlink should be invisible to Start11 and other apps so I am surprised if they are not working correctly but we will do some testing here to see if anything shows up.

My gut says this may be a corrupted OS cache causing both issues especially as we have not had reports of issues with symlinks before.

I would recommend trying the 2.55 beta however as that tweaked icon loading a bit especially with changing some icon sizes as larger than needed were sometimes asked for, so there is always the chance it would help.

Neil: Sure, I'll try the beta.  Where do I download it?
