Groupy 2 Launching saved group when group is already open attempts second file launch instead of focus change

Hello Stardock Community. I am using Groupy 2 over Windows 11 Pro. I have created a saved group which launches 5 Excel 365 windows, each with a specific workbook. If I accidentally re-launch the group when that group is already open, Groupy attempts to launch new copies of the files, which results in a certain amount of Excel calamity.

I cannot find a setting to tell Groupy to just bring a tab into focus if that file is already open. Is that an existing feature somewhere? If not, how can I get it on the books as an ask?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. I tested on my system, but I can not reproduce this issue. When I double click the saved groupy file again after the excel files were open in a group. It simply blink but it did not open another instance for the same files. Need to know more on your system.

  1. Windows 11 full version and OS Build number.
  2. Groupy 2 full version number.
  3. Does the issue appear on specifics excel or any excel files and location of those files on network drive, external drive etc.

Thank you.

Hi Basj,
I'm experiencing the same issue as TomWahl. When I relaunch a saved Groupy 2 group with Excel workbooks already open, it tries to open new instances instead of focusing on the existing ones. This causes Excel to show file-in-use errors or open them as read-only. My files are stored locally, not on a network or external drive. I'm using Groupy 2 version 2.12 on Windows 11 Pro, build 22631.3593.

Only Excel? Same issue with other programs?

Hi Basj,

Thanks for looking at this. Answers to your questions:

1. Windows 11 Pro 24H2 Build 26100.4061 with Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.84.0

2. Groupy version 2.2

3. In my case, I have 4 xlsx workbooks located in 2 SharePoint sites and all fully synced locally. I did do a test where I created a group with 3 local only workbooks and another with 3 workbooks on a SharePoint site synced locally to mimic the problem child. My experience was the same as your test. It executed focus correctly in each use case.

However, I think I may have stumbled on the answer. I notice that the path and file names are pretty long and are expressed in groupy as a URLs. When I edit the groupy config file for the group, I notice that the NewTabName entries are all blank, which seems to be the default behavior. When I edit those manually and set short, unique names for each entry in the group, the problem disappears.

So, I wonder whether this is just a function of the path and filename being too long or otherwise include some sort of character pattern that prevents groupy from correctly identifying an open resource, resulting in multiple launces. Not sure. Will leave that to others.

The workaround seems to be:

1. Create the group and save it

2. In Groupy 2, navigate to Grouping rules | Saved Groups

3. Right click and select Edit saved group

4. In the groupy file, locate the NewTabName setting for each GroupEntry listed

5. For each NewTabName, enter a friendly (probably short) name

6. Close and save the groupy file

Appreciate if you could give some samples on how long were those file names so I can forward your observation to Support.

I wonder, if you open those files locally and the saved groupy group with that, it will still open properly?

Sorry, Basj. I'm pinned and have given this a much time as I can. I have a working solution and will have to leave further troubleshooting to others.
