Stardock Fences - Screen Freakout

8 year Stardock Fences user...

But the past year, Fences has become unusable. When opening folders or moving my mouse, the screen starts to freak out and then goes completely black.  After a few minutes, the screen slowly comes back.  I have to continue to wait - if I move my mouse too early, it will all out black again.

I've uninstalled / reinstalled NUMEROUS times (on Version 6.0 obviously).  I've read other posts experiencing the same issues and followed the Stardock tech's advise - it didn't work either.

I've run the Purge Fences program 3x.   It did nothing.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Are you on Windows "solid color" background setting? If you do, just as a test, please change to "Picture" background. Do you still see the issue if you use this option?

Thank you,

I had the same issues. I noticed this occurring after I setup page switching. Would happen all day long. Turned off page switching and the issue has not occurred. Tried the page switching a week later and sure as sure, the screen color issue would occur. Turned of page switching and back to normal. I really liked the feature, needs to be fixed.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. What do you mean by page switching? Please elaborate. Also, please post a video show your issue so we understand it better.

Thank you.

I had the same issue. I noticed that this issue in my case occurred when I had Pages (page switching selected) and in Personalization - show headers set to never. Set to never and the black screen dose not occur even with page switching selected. The issue is caused with the show headers function selected.

FYI, I thought it was with selecting page switching rather its with show headers - never, the issue occurred. Changed to Always and the issue did not reoccur.

Correction. The issue resurfaced. Went back to settings, Personalization - show headers and Pages, selected and unselected different settings in combination with selecting and unselecting settings (and in combinations). The issue would always pop back up. When i unchecked additional settings in Pages "if hidden, unhide my desktop icons when switching pages" the issue stopped. This is the culprit, selecting any Personalization and Pages settings have not had any screen issue occur.

Unchecked additional settings in Pages "if hidden, unhide my desktop icons when switching pages" the issue stopped. This is the culprit.

"If hidden, unhide my desktop icons when switching pages" is currently checked.

I will uncheck it and follow-up w/ a progress report.

Thank you @b4505

Secondly - The Enable Pages / Multi Pages is the ONLY reason I'm with Stardock Fences.  I've got 5 pages so far - and I'm trying to keep them minimal (had 8 pages at one time).  So discontinuing the "Enable Pages" feature is equivalent to uninstalling Fences.

UPDATE:  Even after unchecking and restarting the laptop, the screen problem returned.

I'm going to try changing the background from a solid color to an image and see if that helps...

I want to AVOID sending a video of my screens as I have files / file names of companies / projects in various stages that I don't want shared (viewable) on the internet...

I am having a hard time to try to reproduce this issue. Please let us know is the issue appear all the time or after specific steps is done. For example, happen everytime after wake from log sleep etc. As I said before please elaborate more.

Also, please share these informations.

  1. Windows 11 full version and OS Build number.
  2. Both on Fences 6 (Beta 1) yes?
  3. Post a video to help us understand it would help us greatly.

Thank you,

Hey everyone -

Just popping in with a quick (and surprisingly positive) update. For the past 12 months, my Stardock Fences has basically been throwing a tantrum and refusing to work properly (see the pics I posted at the top of the page).

I tried everything: uninstalling, reinstalling, random forum tips... even started window shopping for Fences alternatives.

Then BASJ suggested - Change your background from a solid color to a photo.

Well, it’s been 3 Days without a single screen freakout!  I used to be lucky to make it three minutes without some digital chaos.

So, HUGE THANKS to BASJ!  For the first time in months, I'm not yelling &/or cursing at Stardock Fences.

Great, glad to hear that. And if you wish to have a solid color as a wallpaper. You can use this site to make it and download that solid color wall and use them. https://mdigi.tools/solid-color-image-generator/. There is something not working with Fences on Windows own solid color wallpaper.
