Reporting an issue

Please include the following for anything found:

  • Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)

  • Detailed steps to recreate the issue seen

  • Screenshots and videos are very helpful.  Videos can be uploaded to a cloud drive service (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive, YouTube), with a shared link included in your post.  Images can be copied and pasted directly into a post.

  • If there are specific apps that the app does not work (well) with, please note what apps and their exact versions.  If any app is not common, a link to a trial version would be appreciated.

Thank you for your interest and any time you put into making Start11 v2 a better product.

I've got a "black screen" issue going on that only seems to present when Start 11 is being used. The issue is present in both v2.51 and v2.52.

Description as follows:

    • Start 11 enabled

    • Launch Netflix in browser (in Chrome)

    • Load a show (can be playing or paused)

    • Open Start 11 start menu

    • Close Start 11 start menu

Expected behaviour:

Start 11 start menu opens and closes without issue, without affecting anything else.

Actual behaviour:

Start 11 start menu opens fine, but close it causes the screen to go black. Screen then recovers after a few seconds.

Additional info:

When this issue occurs, an error is logged in Windows event log as follows:

The description for Event ID 153 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

\Device\Video3

Error occurred on GPUID: 100

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table

System specs:

    • Windows 11, 1000.26100.83.0

    • 9800X3D

    • ASRock X870E Nova

    • 64GB DDR5 6000/CL30

    • RTX 5090, latest 576.26 (hotfix driver, based on 576.02 WHQL)

Any ideas what could be causing this?

You would need to report this to nvidia as this appears to be a bug in their driver.  It probably happens when a specific combination of events happens such as a video and then the start11 menu close animation happening.  I understand the drivers for the 50xx series have been having a number of issues.

Any further updates on the black screen issue I mentioned earlier?

Nvidia has released a new driver. 576.28

Try this and see if it helps.

Sorry for cross-pointing from https://forums.stardock.com/535585/page/1/#3967897 thread, but I am dealing with very annoying issue still present in 2.52.3 beta, that after a while of using Start11 with vertical taskbar, taskbar's button to app assignment becomes broken, and taskbar buttons are opening random (wrong application) windows.

So far I only received into from Stardock community assistant that I should kill Explorer now and then using some script, but no confirmation from development team that this bug is known and will be fixed. Right now to me it is unacceptable that I need to restart Explorer process 5-8 times a day to reset button assignment, and a script to kill Explorer is not something I can accept.

I'd appreciate somebody from development team confirm this issue. I know that vertical taskbar was an experimental feature introduced in 2.5, but this was the reason I bought this product in the first place (I am looking at you Microsoft ;))

Thank you, Adam

New Start11 user here. I just got a brand-new Dell with Win 11 on it (26100.4061) and noticed a problem with Start 11 related to top-mounted taskbar and the search box. It's set to Windows 7-style task bar. Start11 v2.51.

Normally, it looks like this:

But when you start typing in the search box,it looks like this:

Notice the search box is now about half of the width of the taskbar (you can see the blue border in the picture), and that you can't see what you're typing. If you happen to type it correctly and hit <enter>, then it will bring that item up.

Also notice you can't see all of the text (Outlook (classic) in this case). This is not a result of cropping this picture; it really looks that way.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Do you have Start11v2 Enhance taskbar turn on or off?

Thank you,

"Let Start11 enhance the task bar" is turned off.

If you turn it on does the issue goes away?

Also, not really sure what you mean by this statement.

Yes. When it's turned on, if I click in the search box, a window shows up.

It means just that - that Start 11 is set to emulate the Windows 7 taskbar.

Well, it sort of works. I sometimes have to click twice in the box. One click and the box disappears (but nothing shows up in it's place) and another click in that same area then works.

Regardless, this is the result:

I don't understand.

when I click on the box now, usually the larger menu shows up, then I type something in that search box and it works. Sometimes I have to click twice though to get the larger menu to show up.

Looks like the newest Windows Insider Build broke Start11v2.

I'm installing the beta build, just chiming in wondering if anyone else on Canary builds had that issue.

Define 'broke'.

Let me give you more detail here:

Windows 11 Insider Build 27858, I'm Canary branch, so I expect things to break from time to time.

When I installed the patch, it had overwrote the start menu settings and forced it back to the default Win 11 Start menu style.  So I figured just swap it back and no issue, but the settings in Start11V2 didn't change this time.

So I figured I'd try the beta release, and it worked on install, changed the menu.  Once I rebooted, Windows 11 took the task back over again, restarting services doesn't change it either.

I'm happy to provide any feedback / logs that might be helpful to the team.

While this is useful information, and we may indeed ask for more data, as stated with all our products (and something you are likely used to being on very early builds of Windows), we do not support insider builds of Windows.

If you wish to discuss it further, please create a new thread, stating in the subject that you are on an insider build of Windows and what version.

I also have a suggestion/request, if it hasn't already been made:

There is a lot of wasted space here, would it be possible to put some of them side-by-side?

100% this. Like the old Win7 days or the current alternative "StartAllBack"

Another +1 on this. Horizontal layout for those icons would be huge.

Also, for the clock, if the taskbar is wide enough, have an option to put the time and date side by side on one line.

For context, here's what my dock area looks like. This is what I'd want for Start11.

I believe this was understood and was requested before. Appreciate your feedback. Currently there is nothing announce on this one yet.

It's been a long time since beta 2.5.2.3 was released... no updates?

Thanks.
