desktop laptop fences sync

looking for automatic sync

Am I accurate in concluding that there is no way to set up fences on both my desktop and laptop so that the desktop setup  (and additions and changes) is automatically reflected on my laptop and vice versa?

Hello,
From what I know, Fences do not have Sync layout features build in.

Thank you,

Hi ddavissfusd, the program does not currently have this. But a few questions for you, as we evaluate it for the future:

(1) Are your desktop and laptop different resolutions

(2) If different resolutions, would you be OK with them having different layouts, but the same Fences and syncing the icon associations within the groups.

(3) How would you like syncing to happen. OneDrive etc? If OneDrive, would you be bothered by OneDrive continually syncing a hidden "FencesSettings.ini" file on the desktop, or something similar to that. It'd come up in "recently edited documents". If you had something else in mind for sync let us know.

We're not currently building this feature but if we did, how I think it would go would be:

- It would keep your groups in sync across computers, that is, how many, names, color & other Fence properties etc, icon contents, icon order. Layouts would sync only for exact resolution & monitor-configuration matches. Otherwise, the layout of the Fences would be yours to set up differently on each.

- Folder Portals might be a challenge, since paths might differ per-pc. Welcome to your thoughts there, if you use any. Obvi it would work to make the path relative, but the path may or may not exist on the other system.

- Ideally it just would sync via one or more "data files" within OneDrive, for users who use OneDrive for their desktop, but this does come with complications.

Thoughts?

Thanks for your prompt response.  My laptop (2880x1800) and desktop (5120x2160) have different resolutions .  I would have no problem with different layouts as long as the groups remained intact.

I would be very comfortable with whatever (under the hood) settings would be necessary to provide for some sort of synching.  I love fences.  It's just tiresome having to redo my laptop clutter.  Maybe my best short term solution is to disconnect the laptop from one drive.

Not sure what you mean by folder portals.  I do not have any linked folders on either desktop.

Thanks and very best wishes to you and your family.
