Volley

I've just played a couple of games where my fleets were OP, yet I got crushed due to the volley mechanic.  What happens is I have a much larger fleet with the best beams and shields (no armor or point defense) and some small fleet gets in range and one at a time, fires missiles at my ships.  Each missile takes out a ship, so in one turn, my fleet is left with little or nothing.  I sit there watching it get slowly wasted, which is frustrating.

My best guess is I've read that volley ignores defenses, so I am thinking each missile deals more damage than the hull type (Corvette, in this case), though I'm attacked by ships that are also Corvettes.  I have Hyperion Shrinker and all the miniaturization tech and even Integrity Cloud.  I would think that I have plenty of hull points compared to an attacking ship of the same type, but I lose them one ship per shot.  It seems like one ship firing missiles at a range of two or three hexes with the 40-60 percent reduction in attack strength wouldn't take anything out.

Do I just need to have a larger hull like a Cruiser to absorb the damage?  What can be done to prevent this game wrecking event?  Volley seems OP.  Please help me understand this.

Thank you.

Volley is strong vs smaller ships because they have so few hp you will easily loose 1 ship per attack. Against larger ships with more hp that can be boosted any farther its not nearly as strong.

The other thought I had was to use the Orbital Academies to boost the HP of the ships coming out of one of your shipyard. There's also a couple of ship modules available to up the HP of your ships. Bigger ship hull will be the most useful though.

I had Orbital Academies on my homeworld.  I could have added a policy that would have given me +20% more hit points.... yet all that doesn't add up to much since the base hit points of a Corvette means not much increase no matter what I did.  Though I do wish there was some info on how the AI determines how much attack a ship has for a volley so I could compare it to the hit points, though that is obviously limited since the attack loses 20 percent per hex due to the distance modifier.

The solution for me is to make larger hull Cruisers so the small class of ships don't take them out one shot at a time.  Production takes longer, but if you specialize and get those adjacency manufacturing buildings and the Shipyard Stimulus policy (+20% Military), you can get enough production going as to quickly turn those out and have enough to not get blindsided.  It seems that the other buffs like Warforged Favor, Warforged Leaders, and even Starport do not add up to much of an increase, but I suppose enough of a little buff adds up to a moderate amount over time.  Takes some thought to collect them all.

Thanks for your help.

The volley system in Galactic Civilizations 4 often ignores shields and armor, making it very effective against lightly-armored ships like Corvettes, even when facing ships of the same type. To counter this, consider using larger hulls (like Cruisers) for better defense, or integrate point defense systems to intercept missiles. Also, improving armor can help reduce damage.
