Can't connect to secondary machine--POSSIBLE issue with VPN or steam

I've bought Multiplicity KVM via steam and am trying to set it up to work between a win10 desktop and win11 laptop, without success so far. I believe part of the problem is that the secondary PC (laptop) uses a VPN, but even with that disabled the two are not able to connect. I've tried using the public IP of the secondary machine but the primary never finds it.

I've already read a couple support threads on this topic:

https://forums.stardock.com/522393/unable-to-connect-to-secondary-when-its-on-vpn
https://forums.stardock.com/528085/can-a-vpn-nordvpnexpesssharksurf-be-used-to-protect-my-computers-and-still-

And win11 is allegedly supported here: https://forums.stardock.com/505717/stardock-app-compatibility

I would also like to install on the secondary machine without steam, which is allegedly possible according to this thread: https://forums.stardock.com/506458/q-install-on-2nd-pc-wo-steam-client

However, that links to Multiplicity 4 and I'm not 100% certain that the steam version isn't 3.x--can anyone confirm whether this is the case, and if so whether it makes a difference?

Also be aware MP4 cannot connect to MP3 and MP3 cannot connect to MP4.  So both ends must be the same major version.

Thanks, both of you! I will follow up on your suggestions, but first I have a question about this:

I've confirmed that my steam version is 3.x, which as far as I'm aware is the only version available there. How can I get a free download of MP3 to put on the secondary computer? Everything I found on stardock.com is--understandably--only pushing MP4, but as you said that's a non-starter.

From what I know, if you purchased from Steam, you should only install and activate it via Steam.

Yes, you would install MP3 with the Steam client for a all PC if that is where the purchase was made.
