how to get units off a transport ship

this forum had an old thread about this topic but the thread is now locked (closed to new posts) and the advice was NOT very straight forward

getting units to unload out of a transport ship is NOT easy and certainly NOT self obvious

I am playing the Lord Relias of Altar scenario (the first scenario it gives out to play). if you beat an axeman army guarding a  pier lair on the west coast near the Yithril Invasion city of Kett the reward is a transport ship. so I took off in this ship and then had a problem trying to unload my units

there are a VERY FEW number of coastal beach tiles in this scenario. most coastal tiles are CLIFFS which do NOT permit a boat to unload its units

the workaround is to use the water 3 magic 'raise land' spell and create a beach tile to replace the coastal cliff. a beach tile allows your unit to land. it also allows a road to be built on it (unlike a cliff tile)

BTW for some reason this scenario turned OFF the 'lower land' spell in earth 3 magic. I guess the scenario really wants you to fight the monsters it has in a cliff wall maze to get to the treasure. however in other cases blocked river tiles or gated land areas can still be accessed by using beach tiles to create a new land bridge to the by default forbidden tiles

using raise land will turn cliff tiles on the coast into beach tiles. the best result for creating a beach is when there are at least two passable land tiles adjacent to where you cast raise land. with only one adjacent land tile  water tiles may be created instead of the intended beach tile. the raise land spell only costs 5 mana to cast so it usually takes very little time to fix such beach tile creation errors

the practical use of transport ships is questionable as long raise land can create beach land bridges to forbidden or unreachable map areas and commanders can build roads to hasten movement

a transport ships moves 8 tiles, but this is quite slow in comparison to units moving at least 12 tiles on a land tile with roads (4x faster MP with roads, most units have 3 MP, so moving on roads is for 12 tiles with 3 MP)

though not related to transport ships another use of beach tiles is to dam up a river that dumps into a lake or sea. this may cause one or more of your cities to get an error that claims it is no longer contiguous with capital city and hence suffers a new 15% city unrest penalty

I have found no general rule of what triggers this bug. in some cases after a few turns the bug disappears in one or more of the bugged cities (and hence the unjustified 15% city unrest penalty for those unbugged cities)

I have found other cases of the non contiguous to capital city bug. still have no clue what causes it but eventually it fixes itself, sometimes after just one turn

the recent BUG I found is that mana per turn is sometimes is incorrectly reported when a turn begins. to get the correct mana per turn you have to save this new turn and then reload the save. only then is the correct mana per turn calculated in the top screen icons
