Slow download speeds

Slow download speeds

The download speeds are really slow. According to some of the URLs, it appears to be pointing to https://cdn.stardock.us/ but damn, whatever CDN you're using is not even remotely fast. And I'm on AT&T FTTH service with 1 Gbps downstream.

Anyone having issues downloading, you can find the file here.

If Stardock had actual tech support we could contact someone about it instead of whining here until somebody notices...

THANK YOU!!

Update:  oops, this is not the latest version :(

Hello,

Not only is Slow 150Kb/s ish I can live with that, but I cant download it. The onedrive link shared here doesnt work

The update stucks at 33% and downloading from account in http ends with failed and retry doesnt work.

The site is also extremly slow, Iam from europe I have a 1Gb/s fiber network, never had issues before

I've been trying to download the start11 2.56 update all day.  It goes to 30 or 40MB out of 54.49MB and hangs there.  Waited over an hour.

I managed to download the Start11 v2.5.6.3 installer using Internet Download Manager.
Downloads kept failing using various browsers.

I got lucky and version 2.5.6.3 downloaded from my account without stopping although at slow speeds as others have mentioned

I grabbed the wrong file, it should now be 2.56

I actually finally got it the conventional way.  Not sure what setup Stardock is using, but their downloads on a good day are slow as molasses by today's standards.

We have rolled back the change that we believe was causing this issue, download speeds will be reduced again until we identify the exact cause why some were getting faster downloads and others it was failing halfway through the process.

You need to replace the link in your earlier post - changing the file expired the link..  /j

Typical download speeds since I came back to Start11 a couple months ago seem to be around 10-20KB/s :(

I just tried downloading the installer again using a browser, and it completed successfully, although very slow. But I find all Stardock downloads slow. Even the forum is very slow today.

The fix would be to start using Cloudflare as your CDN!!!

I mean come on, it's really that simple! Your downloads would be cached globally in nearly every part of the world, it's not that hard! It's free to sign up for God's sake!

It’s true that Cloudflare could improve global download performance, but it’s not quite as simple as signing up.
Stardock’s delivery system is tied into account verification, licensing, and legacy infrastructure that’s been around for years.
Switching to a CDN like Cloudflare isn’t just a one-click change — it would require reworking large parts of that backend to handle authentication and download integrity properly.
I’m sure they’re aware of the issue, but rolling out something that affects thousands of customers takes careful planning.

Just my two cents (or less).

Thank you,

Precisely. The same fantastic team that brought WC, etc. back from oblivion will solve this problem, as well. It has their attention. This is affecting everyone, and Stardock's business, as well...so let's let them do their job.

Patience is a virtue...

Start11, for instance, does not require any authentication before download. The "free trial" version is no different from the paid version - licensing is handled later.

Like a lot of tech people (myself included), they are overcomplicating a trivial matter -- you buy some space on someone's CDN and you park your files there..

But the download itself is no different than a download performed by someone else. The file hashes are the same no matter if you download it under one account from somewhere in England versus someone who downloaded it from somewhere in the US.

With that being said, static files such as simple installation/setup files should be able to be downloaded quickly and, of course, be cached globally with the likes of Cloudflare.

Obviously, those setup files can and probably do "phone home" to Stardock for authentication and license checking but that's an easy thing to do and probably only requires a few kilobytes at most. That, obviously, can't be done with Cloudflare but that would be easy to handle—you just have the API call be done with a server that's not behind Cloudflare.

with a release of software today that is going to add thousands of additional downloads per hour over a nominal day.

I tried again today and couldn't see any improvement at all. I don't know what was included in the release, but it had no effect on the download speed.
I'm sorry to say this, but nothing has changed since I bought the software a few years ago. The download speed was and still is around 100 kB/s. Guys, this is really not up to date anymore.

In this thread alone, you have announced or proclaimed improvements since 2024. But honestly, there have been none.

At this point it is now clearly on their radar - the problem is obvious and can be demonstrated at will.

They will do something about it when they choose to.

p.s.  Update:  it took 40 seconds for the system to ingest this reply.

Unfortunately. Thanks for all the suggestions for solutions, everyone.

At this point, I believe the subject has been exhausted, so the thread is locked.
