Start11 - Newly installed applications do not show up in start menu without Explorer restart

I'm currently trialling Start11, using "Windows 11 Style" start menu. When I install new applications, they do not appear in the "All Apps" list until I restart Explorer (or reboot). Anything I can do to fix this? Or is this just a bug?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your system.

  1. Windows 10 or 11? Need its full version and OS Build number. Please use Winver.exe
  2. Start11 version number.

Thank you.

I am on Windows 11, Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4037)

Start11 version 2.1 (latest).

Please check if "Show recently installed apps" is turn on. Refer screenshot below. While in "All Program" panel, Right click on that "#" item, to make that menu show up.

Yes, show recently installed apps is enabled, but new apps do not appear there, nor do they appear further down in the All Apps list, until Explorer is restarted.

Yes, I believe this is true on default Windows 11 Start panel too. You just need to restart Explorer.exe.

The default Windows 11 start menu does show newly installed apps without having to restart Explorer.

If the solution for new apps not showing up in the start menu is to restart Explorer, this should be considered a bug. I shouldn't have to restart it every time I install something new.

The default Windows 11 start menu does show newly installed apps without having to restart Explorer.

Can you help me see exactly where/how you've observed this?  If video isn't possible, a screenshot image could still be helpful so we can make sure to understand your exact meaning here.

Here's what I've found in a Sandbox Client reproduction video:

  • After selecting "Show recently added apps" setting in native Win11 (Settings -> Personalization -> Start)
    • Recently added apps will now appear under "Recommended"

Video: https://cdn.stardock.us/support/uploads/WindowsSandboxClient_2024-09-20_11-31-22amcguinness.mp4

Does this match what you've seen, or did you mean something else?  If this doesn't match, I need to know:

  • What newly installed app you've seen this with.
  • Where exactly it's appearing on your Start Menu (without Start11 installed/running, and without restarting the explorer.exe process).

Thank you,

I have exactly the same problem as samuryan89 who started this thread.

Abisnabidam - the video you linked above shows exactly how it should be! The problem is that video shows Windows11 standard Start Menu, not Start11 start menu! In built-in Start menu everything works as expected but in Start11 the lower part (Recommended) does not show up! I have Start11 version 2.11.

The video was posted to clear up confusion surrounding user expectations related to the native windows behavior.  The "Recommended" section consists of more than just the "recently installed/added apps" originally reported in this issue.  While different, they are related.  Currently, "Recently installed/added" apps will appear in Start11 with the "All Apps" list if enabled.

However, as native Windows' "Recommended" section is able to include "Recently opened" along with "recently added apps", I take it you are expecting the same with Start 11?  I'll have your comments logged as a feature request for internal review.

What I was originally trying to say in my original post was that in Start11, newly installed apps do NOT show up in All Apps, until Explorer is restarted.

Is your Start11 version 2.1.0.0 or 2.1.1.0?

I don't see this issue on my Windows 11 Pro system. (23H2 - 22635.4445)

I have 2.1.1 with Windows 23H2 and it reproduces for me. :(

I'm waking up this thread because this silly bug is still not fixed!

I'm running Start11 version 2.56, Windows 11 Pro, Version 25H2, OS Build 26200.7462

I've just installed SoftMaker Office. In the Start11 start menu, it does not appear under 'All apps'. In the Windows 11 start menu it does appear under 'All'.

Also, a new detail: even though it does not appear under Start11 'All apps', typing 'Softmaker' into the 'Search Apps and files' box DOES find it.

A reboot fixes the bug.

A reboot fixes the bug.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. If you restart Explorer.exe instead, does that make it appear properly?
