[Start11 V2] "Never combine" option does not use the entire available taskbar space

Hi,

I'm getting this empty space when using the "Never Combine" option. Closing some of the apps will make it use the full space, but that kinda defeats the purpose of this feature, I think.

I have "Quick Launch", Outlook and Slimjet (browser) pinned to the taskbar (left most items in the picture)

Is there anything I can do to avoid/fix this issue?

OS: Windows 11 23H2, 22631.3880

Start 11 v2.1

Thanks.

Just curious, how do you remember which icon goes to which window?

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Need to know more on your issue.

  1. This is with Start11 enhance turn on or off?
  2. Never combine in Start11 enhance taskbar setting with "Always hide text on button..." turn on?

Thank you.

This example is a bit extreme, because I have more windows than usual. However, on Windows 10 where I had the same setup, enough of the button text would show that I could tell which window was what. Worst case, I can use peek (by hovering over the button) to get a snapshot of the contents of that window.

One more thing to note, this is a dual monitor setup (Dell U2719DX) laid horizontally side-by-side. The screenshot I sent earlier was from the primary monitor.

I can not reproduce your issue on my system. This is what I get on my system.

- Do you have pinned items on the task bar? Try pinning quick launch and a couple of other items.

- Is the task bar size "small with wide icon spacing"? That's what I'm using.

- I also have the start button only showing on the primary monitor.

- Do you have a dual monitor setup?

I just updated from Windows 10 and the Windows 11 taskbar/start menu is a huge step back. I'm trying to replicate the form/functionality of Win10 taskbar with your software.

I have a couple of other minor quibbles as well, which should probably be a separate ticket:

- Can't reorder items in the quick launch menu. They are always auto sorted. Annoying, but I can live with that.

- Reordering a button (that's on both monitors) moves them BOTH to the same position. In Win10, the button on each bar had its own position. More annoying, but I'm putting up with that.

** Edited to add some extra info.

I do have few pinned items on the taskbar those icons without any dot under it are pinned items.

- I think the task bar button size is not small? That's what I'm using.

Its on medium taskbar size. Should have mentioned you on small taskbar.

- Do you have a dual monitor setup?

No tested on single monitor setting

One issue at a time is best choice also include more details such as which menu style you're using, etc. Do know that not all Windows 10 features can be apply on Windows 11 with Start11 on it. Some features can not be implemented without sacrificing something else. For example Vertical taskbar can not be implemented with Start11. Drag primary taskbar to secondary monitor won't work etc.

Ok, I'll create a separate ticket for those. This issue is more pressing.

Can you try with:
- Small with wide icon spacing
- Multi monitor (if possible)
- The start button only showing on the primary monitor

This is what I get: with same setting as what on your system.

The only time I saw the taskbar buttons cramped up to the left is when those buttons change from buttons with text to no text as you add more open Windows. I think this is what you're seeing. This, for me, is more for cosmetic/look of those buttons rather than having unreadable text appear, it just get removed when there no space to show a readable text. Hence the sudden free space.

That does seem like what I'm seeing. However, I do not agree that it's just cosmetic, as when it's right at the edge, a single window popping up, such as a top level notification window/message box, will suddenly scrunch up all the buttons. In addition, it makes the buttons unusable, as all the text disappears. What's worse, if you were just about to click a button, when this happens, it can make the mouse land on the wrong button.

Can this behavior be updated to be the same as the Win10 taskbar? This is simulating about the same number of open windows on a Win10 system. As you can see, the buttons are much more readable.

And this is when the text can't be displayed at all. As you can see this looks much better as well.

If that can't be done, at least increase the number of windows that can be shown before the scrunching happens. If that matches Win10, then I think this will be much better.

Thanks.

Maybe it is better if you can post a video and showing us what you're looking at and referring to. That will make us understand your issue better.

Ok, here's a short video: Link

In that you can see me hovering over the button that I want to click. When the messagebox appears, because the buttons scrunch up, the click will end up on an empty space.

From your video, any idea what is that new Taskbar button appear as that message came up and causing the taskbar buttons to cramp up to the left?

I don't think that is from Start11.

No, that's not from Start11. That's my script that popped up a message box. This simulates some application bringing up a top level window.

Repro Steps:

- Get all the buttons on the taskbar to the state that opening a new window will make them scrunch up.

- Start the script that has a timer, which when expired pops up the dialog box.

- Hover over the button that you want to click.

- Timer expires, dialog box is shown, buttons scrunch up.

Yes, the taskbar buttons cramped up to the left when there is no more space for an alphabet to appear on the taskbar button, when you introduce a new taskbar button. I think moving forward, I think it best for Support to look into this one. I have forwarded your problem/question to Stardock Support Team for their assistance. Please keep an eye on this thread for any updates. We appreciate your feedback and patience.

When there is insufficient space for text to show at all it automatically shrinks buttons to an even size as visually looks better.

We can probably add a registry key override to stop this in the future.

I would appreciate that.

Would that make it so the buttons behave the same way on the native task bar in Win10 in this situation?

Thanks!
