TEC Trade Ships Navigation Question

I've been unable to find any information specifically on TEC trade ships. How exactly do TEC trade ships navigate? Do trade ships only move between trade ports, or will they venture out into other systems? There are a number TEC civilian research options that improve trade ships, but it is difficult to evaluate their full impact without knowing how trade ships operate.

I am not an expert on the topic, but from my playing I believe that they just move between other trade stations? But I did build a station in every owned sector so I can’t say that is 100% the case.
