automatically set Fences 2.0 to "Run as Administrator,"

This is never going to be the solution.

I would like to have you participate in this thread, please.

All,

We have rolled the production version of Fences back to 5.80 and demoted Fences 5.81 to 'beta'.  Please see known issues for the reasons why.

Thanks for your feedback

OK it is going to take a while to do these steps. I have several questions.

1.  How do you post pictures

2. Why if you have to 'Run as Administrator to get Fences to work can't a way to automatically load Run as Administrator be scripted to set fences App to "Run as Administrator".  Either by scripting it to run or by somehow setting a path to set Run as Administrator

3. Does Multiple Monitors matter whether they are stretched. or mirrored.  I have two monitors, and both have the exact same image on them because I sit a good 10 feet from my monitor.

4. Do I have to physically unhook my monitor or is pulling the power cord the same as.  Especially since I mirror my monitors and they show the same thing.

5.  I will have to reinstall Fences 5.81 again and hopefully it will work better than it did I don't use my desktop as much as I used to because I have folder on my task bar and don't access my desk to open app as much because I use the folders on my taskbar. Every once in a I have a reason to access so I can reload fences 5.81 and start pulling the information you requested.

Edited for clarity by admin: Sean Drohan

Thanks for the information. It’s going to take me a while to go through all the settings, but in the meantime, I reinstalled Fences 5.81. However, things just got stranger after the reinstallation.

Now, I’m unable to add any icons to any Fences. I didn’t try portals, but I suspect I could add icons to portals, just not to Fences. When I try to drag and drop an icon into a Fence, it’s as if the icon drops straight through the Fence and lands on the layer below. The Fence is somewhat transparent, but the icon that fell through disappears under the Fence. To find the icon, I have to move the Fence to see it beneath.

Before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 earlier today, I could place icons in Fences, and I could also show portals on my desktop, but they would disappear every time I rebooted. This time, I didn’t reboot before uninstalling Fences 5.81. I reinstalled Fences 2.0, which only worked if I manually right-clicked and selected "Run as Administrator."

After reading a comment about how Fences 2.0 could never be set up with a script, I found a potential workaround: creating a shortcut that launches the application with Administrator privileges using the following command:

runas /user:ComputerName\Administrator /savecred "C:\PathToProgram.exe"

I didn’t try it because I had already reinstalled Fences 5.81, but it’s a fallback if I need to go back to Fences 2.0.

Here’s where it gets even stranger: After reinstalling Fences 5.81, it somehow retained the configuration exactly as it was before I uninstalled it earlier today. I couldn’t believe it—it was precisely how I left it. However, I still can’t add new icons to any Fence, whether it’s a new one I create or an old one from before the reinstallation. I’ve attached a screenshot of the Fences and Portal I built before uninstalling Fences 5.81.

So, in theory, if I eventually can add icons to Fences again, like what happened last time, I could build up my desktop. If the same pattern holds, I could then uninstall Fences 5.81, reinstall Fences 2.0, uninstall Fences 2.0, and reinstall Fences 5.81. If it works as it did before, my desktop would be exactly how I want it, with all my icons in the Fences.

I haven’t tried that yet because I can’t add icons to any Fences right now. But if things happen as they did before, after letting Fences 5.81 sit on my desktop for a while, I might be able to start adding icons again. Then, I could uninstall and reinstall Fences 5.81, and my icons should stay in the Fences.

I’ve rebooted my PC at least once since reinstalling Fences 5.81, and for now, the icons I added before uninstalling Fences 5.81 are staying on my desktop after a reboot. This is the strangest thing I’ve seen with Fences.

I think i posted to the forum my experiences with uninstalling Fences 5.81 and reinstall Fences 5.81 and how the changes I made before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 stuck to my desktop after I reinstalled Fences 5.81.

Thanks for the info.  It is going to take me a while to go through all the settings but in the Meantime, I went ahead and reinstalled Fences 5.81.  And if thing weren't strange enough already, they just got stranger After I reinstalled Fences 5.81 it was back to me not being able to add any icons to any fences.  I didn't try portals, but I suspect I could install icons to portals just not to Fence.   It is like when I try to drag and drop an icon in a Fence it is like the icon drops straight through the Fence and lands on a layer below the Fence.  And even though the fence is kind of see through the icon I dropped into the Fence that fell straight through disappeared under the Fence I created.  To find the icon I have to move the Fence to see the icon below it.  But that is the least of strange.  Before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 earlier today i could place icons in Fences and I could also show portals on my desktop, but they would disappear every time I rebooted.   But this time I didn't reboot before I uninstalled Fences 5.81 and reinstalled Fences 2.o and it would only work if I manually right clicked and selected "Run as Administrator".  After the comment on the Fences 2.0 could never be setup with a script I found this:  "Now we'll create a new shortcut that launches the application with Administrator privileges. Right-click the desktop (or elsewhere), point to New, and select Shortcut. Enter a command based on the following one into the box that appears: runas /user: ComputerName Administrator /savecred " C:PathToProgram.exe "".  I didn't try it because I already Fences 5.81 so this is a fall back if I go back to Fences 2.0.  But here is where it starts to get strange and then strange some more.  After I reinstalled Fences 5.81 I don't know how it happened, but it had the configuration just as I left it before I uninstalled Fences 5.81earlier today.  I couldn't believe it.  It was exactly the way I left it when I uninstalled Fences 5.81.  I still can add new icons to either new fence I create or old Fence the I created before I uninstalled Fences 5.81.  I have attached a screenshot of the Fences and Portal I built before I uninstalled Fences 5.81.  Now that is strange on top of strange.  So, in theory if I am again able to add icons to Fences like happened last time where after a while I could start adding icons to Fences and portals old and new I could build up my desktop and if the same holds true again I could then uninstall Fences 5.81 and to be safe reinstall Fences 2.0 ad then uninstall Fences 2.0 and reinstall Fences 5.81 and if the same holds true my desktop would be exactly the way I want i with all my icon in the Fences and it would be the desktop i am trying to build out to. I haven't tried that ai I currently can't add icons to any Fences currently.  But if the same thing happen like it did before after I let Fences 5.81 sit on my desktop for  a while and see if I can then start to add icons to Fences again and uninstall Fences 5.81 and reinstall Fences 5.81 and if the same holds true that happened last time the icons I want in Fences will be in Fences after I reinstall Fences 5.81 again.  But I am not going to  mess up what I have now jst to get more icon on my desktop.  And if I didn't say I also rebooted my PC atleast once since I reinstalled Fences 5.81 and for right no the icons I added to Fences before I uninstalled Fence 5.81 is staying on my desktop after a reboot  And that is the strangest thing I have seen with FencesAfter reinstall and After Reboot.

I don't have the time to particiapte in the solution by doing the whole 5.82 thing, but I did want to say that I am having the same multi-monitor setup issues everyone else is having (5 screens). I'm going to install 5.80 and disable updates for a while.

Any reasons to update to Fences.exe: 5.8.3.4?  All seems well for me with 5.8.2.5.  I will update if it might confirm anything for you.

Any guess on when the "Production" update will be released?

Btw, as far as I recall this is the first problem I have experienced with Fences going back to v1.01 in 2011, mostly on multi monitors for last 10 years or maybe more.  I've not used a lot of the features though.  I've had lots of people ask how I keep my desktop organized.

Problem was minor for me, and the fix was quick.  Good job.  Thanks.

Hey SeaBobWire, great qu! 5.8.2.x was part of a lineage of debug-heavy builds, 5.8.3.4 represents a production-branch build with the learnings from 5.8.2.x integrated.

Glad the problem was found and solved quickly; thanks likewise for your & @all's help!

Here's something I just noticed:  I have some fences that are sorted by "Number of times opened".  If I select an icon with the mouse and double-click to open, then eventually the program shortcut will advance to the top.  However, if I select the icon with the mouse and press Enter to open it, it will descend in the rankings.   Interesting, huh?

I'm on Fences 5.8.1 and Windows 10 Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4894)

Interesting indeed. I've reproduced the same and logged it.
