Start Button Animation Issue

Unexpected cycling through frames when clicked

Issue description

The animation of the Start button seems a little odd to me.

Expected animation sequence: Start on normal frame, fade to hover frame, switch to pressed frame on click

Actual animation sequence: Start on normal frame, fade to hover frame, cycle through all frames on click (or something like that)

Files to demonstrate the issue

Download my screen recording (26 seconds, 400x264, 532 KB) from the button in the upper left corner of this page.

I recommend viewing the video in VLC Media Player, as that software has the necessary codecs. If you have trouble viewing the recording, please let me know.

Download the Start button image (36x108, 310 bytes) I used for this issue report from the button in the upper left corner of this page.

I watched your video (which plays fine in Clipchamp) and then downloaded your start button and tested on Windows 11. What you are seeing is Normal>Hover>Flash Normal & display Clicked. I tired this with several other of my custom start buttons and see the same result. I think this has something to de with how Windows 11 handles the start button. It seems to be less noticeable with image buttons.

Thanks for clearing that up. How might I create an image button that would make the effect less noticeable?

There are a lot of custom start buttons on WinCustomize at https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/start_menu_buttons

That said, if you have an image editor of some sort, you can create a start button. For Windows 10, the file should be a 40x120 PNG file. The width could be wider than 40 pixels, but the height should be 120 pixels. Divide the height into thirds for the button transitions, 40-40-40. This size will also resize automatically on Windows 11, and work well.

Stardock also has created a simple to tool to create start button. You can download it from here.
