Object Desktop members can get the release from within Object Desktop Manager

Individual purchases (as well as Object Desktop Members) can also be obtained from your account page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

For guest check-out purchase (no account), from this link: http://www.stardock.com/support/productkeyretrieval

Reporting an issue

Please include the following for anything found:

  • Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)

  • Detailed steps to recreate the issue seen

  • Screenshots and videos are very helpful.  Videos can be uploaded to a cloud drive service (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive, YouTube), with a shared link included in your post.  Images can be copied and pasted directly into a post.

  • If there are specific apps that the app does not work (well) with, please note what apps and their exact versions.  If any app is not common, a link to a trial version would be appreciated.

Hi Francky, we recommending using the new layout adjustment system. Have you tried this out and if so are you still experiencing the issue?

You'll want to enable "Store my layout on a per-monitor-configuration basis", make an adjustment to your layout (to make sure it sets in; give it a moment after making the change) and then try unplugging/replugging any monitor, and it should restore itself just fine.

This is what is mentioned in the troubleshooting, and what I have setup, and it doesn't not work for me.

Dr.W,

All fences, whether Regular icon fences or Folder Portals, scroll more than one "line" at a time.

Thanks, BT

I believe this has been fixed in the 5.81 Beta.

  • Fix: Folder Portals now correctly scroll with the mouse wheel one icon at a time, instead of Explorer's default of 1.5x at a time.

In 5.80 I still have this issue:
Run a program in a different screen resolution ( e.g. from1920x1080 to 800x600) and ending that program will return Fences, but inside all the icons are in a random order (or whatever order they are, it is not an alphabetic order or so...).
The only thing I can do than is to restore a snapshot.
(and that was also a surprise finding it where it went, but others already mentioned that)
I hoped that 5.80 would be better than 5.54 in that behaviour.
To be honest, I like the chameleon effects, but that is not a must for me. I'm still thinking of returning to version 4, which kept my icons where they were all the time.
Anybody having the same problems?

Are we talking Desktop Fences or Folder Portal Fences with this issue? Also, there is a new Beta version of Fences 5.81.

I agree with you, I think I will go back to version 4; I am fedup to have to recreate my Fences and move my icones everytime I reboot my computer.

That is certainly anyone's prerogative but it is truly a shame if 'Store my layouts on a per-monitor-configuration basis' is not even being attempted:

This is so important that with 5.81 we now force it set to that on the initial install.

Going forward, we cannot assist anyone with monitor \ icon placement issues if this is not set.  If there are reproducible issues with it set, we will work on them but we need your help to find all the unique situations and configurations clients can possibly have.

I would want you on the beta as that is what we will be migrating to.

If you can still reproduce the issue after an install and reboot with it, I would want you to participate in this thread so it is the only focus.

Along with the basics outlined in the linked thread, Every single bit of detail you can include is valuable:

  • What are the scenarios where Fences does not perform as expected? Example

'Fences works fine when [scenario 1], however, when I have [scenario 2], it fails.

This should include exactly what is the case for each scenario (monitors, connection types (docking station, HDMI, DVI, etc)) and steps you need to take to see it.

  • Video is gold.  Whatever you can showcase in it, the better. You can upload any recordings to a cloud service of your choice and past a shared link to it in the post.

  • An export of your Fences settings.  Help with that can be found here:
    https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1416429609/Backup+of+Fences+Configuration+Settings#Batch-File
That can also be included in a shared link post or PM'd to me if you do not want that information public.

  • If you are using any monitor manipulation software like Actual Multiple Monitors or Display Fusion and, if they are uninstalled (disable is not enough), can you still reproduce the issue.

  • If you have other PCs, is it reproducible with them?

Having an issue with Create Fence window popping up after the update:

Does that last past a reboot?

If you install the current 5.81 Beta, can you still reproduce it?

I don't want to be rude but FFS have you read my messages, it is activated on my laptop since I have been asked to follow the troubleshooting, but it has 0 effect, if I try to restore a backup, it restores partially the Fences, and icônes are not put back in their dedicated Fence. I have V5 at work, and it's a mess, I home I haven't upgraded yet, and everything is working as intended.

Now serious question, is there any log that we could provide you to try to debug this? Can you reproduce the problem with a similar configuration?

I did install the beta, no difference in behaviour. Is there a way I can sent the .reg files (the OK and the NOK ones, and the .xml files from the back-up)? Will that help?
Making a video is possible, but I can't do that soon, we are busy with some work on the house.

@Francky @Jagio

I believe you should post your finding in this thread https://forums.stardock.com/528229 as mention above by Sean and try the latest beta so we all on the same version level.

Hi Jagio, so– we did load this up (recreating the placeholder files and all), and so far going back and forth between 1080p and 800x600 cannot yet reproduce. Everything seems to come back and forth in the correct order.

Not finding any smoking gun here, but, found a possibility anyhow regarding low resolutions and icon placement.

This will patch your existing installation. Give it a few back and forths and let's see if any improvement. We can work to continue to try to reproduce on our end. Thanks for all the information

Please make the layout backups work like before v 5.80. I have currently rolled back to v 5.50 and will not install any new versions until this is fixed.

We have a mix of Fences 3, 4 & 5 on all our laptops and until now this hasn't been any problem at all. But now we can't name our backups and can't find them since they are now hidden when the user needs them.

Hi Janne– what are the reasons you're needing to name your backups and are switching between them? Thank you.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. But, on the new Fences v5.81 Beta, you can now rename the saved backup. Please try Fences v5.81 Beta.

Thank you.

Fences 5.81 Beta added the ability to rename and re-capture the backups.

Should note – this feature was cautiously added back. We found that folks have been using it as a crutch for the multi-monitor switching not working properly. The new system should take care of that – storing different multi-mon configurations separately – so it should no longer be necessary to name backups. Backups store "everything" and at one specific state in time – so switching between them is not a very good solution hence we have been downgrading it.

So! Still looking to learn more about what the purpose everyone is having around renaming their backups, so that we can learn and build more around this. Thank you 🙏 (@Janne)

Daily Backups are First in, First out, max seven days. Named backups are not deleted except by the user.

Right. Well snapshots can still be taken manually which are kept indefinitely. Just not renameable.

Given that there are screenshots of the backups, wondering the purpose for the rename, and the need to restore these old backups?

Aware of course that it can be handy to have a failsafe.
