War of Conquest

I had an AI civ declare a War of conquest against me.

I noted that when I hovered the mouse over the banner on the Legacy display that the percentage was increasing. They were getting increases because they were able to ambush some of my solo ships.

At the same time I was slowly conquering both planets and core worlds.

Therefore I think there should be a negative impact on the percentage score card when the civ that declared the war loses core worlds and/or planets.

Hello, so you want the war progress to be more of a back and forth with negatives and positives?

As far as I know, getting war progress is a bad thing. Once it's filled up negative events start firing and the AI will be more willing to end the war. I don't think there are any positive things associated with the aggressor filling the progress bar up.

Let me know if I'm mistaken though!

This whole war declaration mechanic doesn't really work out. In late game, when I declare a war on a neighbour and destroy some of his fleets, war progress jumps immediately to 2000% or so and negative consequences start to happen. Mind you, on turn ONE of the war!

The funny thing is that I cannot even end the war as the game wants me to since there is a blocking period of 10 turns or so before you can talk to your adversary again. At the very least, negative war consequences should only start happening if the initial blocking period is over.

Also the negative dip consequences never seem to expire. You just always have a dip penalty. Fortunately there are so many sources of dip bonuses it doesn't really matter. Knee jerk reaction is to be conservative about the type of war, but in practice it's best to be generous, especially against tougher opponents.

I don't think they work as advertised.

If I was to defensively declare war on an encroaching enemy I would quickly find myself taking massive hits to approval just from the ship battles raising the war progress. Conversely, I could use the same war type to quickly take several planets from a weaker enemy and end the war/destroy them before the penalties kick on.

I'm not sure if this is mechanically good or bad, it's just that the flavor text for the war types is deceptive.

Personally, I'd have the war types tick up for different reasons. The first one, for example, may allow more ship-to-ship battles, but tick up quickly if actually territory is gained.

From my perspective they were not really making progress.

But I read the other replies and I learned that this progress percentage is not one sided.

Thank you.

I would love to see positive diplomacy points for liberation wars or defending ally etc.
