Excellent news BoXXi......guess you were really attached to that mouse of yours.....

and I think the ps/2 port actually works better for the mouse. I don't have one on this computer so I wouldn't know. Supposedly there is a problem with the usb ports. When I updated xp my usb ports stopped working. It took me forever to get them back. And every once in a while they stop working and I have to scan for harware changes. I think xp forgets about the usbs every once and awhile

Who was it that found a cat hair inside their mouse? If I remember right, they blew it out... mouse worked fine.

I fixed similiar problem by unplugging while compuuter is on ( USB only! ) then reboot, and plug it back on when computer is done booting up.

I think sometimes windows forgets....

Wife's computer has a optical mouse hooked up to the PS2 port. It died. Hooked it up to a USB port, rebooted and it came alive. Rehooked it up to the PS2 port and has worked fine there ever since. That's all I did to get it working again. Weird

My usb hub( Is like an internal hub, I have two in front, four at the back of the PC) I have a Graphire2 tablet and don't ask me why it doesn't work on the 1,2 and 4 usb port at the back of the PC, it works only in the 3 usb port. But my wireless control and my digital camera work on all of them.

Possibly the others might not be powered (active: as in up the voltage to the device) ports and the wireless and camera are passive (not needing extra juice to power communications between the device and the hub) usb devices, or vise-a-versa?



My in-Laws bought my daughter a digital camera for xmas and then tell me it I have to remove all usb devices or it won't transfer the pic's? So I brought it home and hooked it up and checked it between my passive and active external usb hubs and sure enough the powered (active) hub worked like a charm but the 4 port passive (no power supply, drawing from just the port on the computer) didn't work in the least...

I have a bad USB port.  I thought that my new printer was bad, but found out that the port was bad.  It works OK with an input device (like scanner) but won't work with a printer or external CD burner.  It's so weird.

lets just blame USB standard 2.0!

Sams Club has a set of external USB hubs for $24.99. 1 powered 4 port and one unpowered 4 port. Also if you don't mind opening the box and installing a usb-port card you could get it back working. I like the externals because I don't have to pull my system out of my desk to plug and un-plug things, for some reason if you hook all the back ports up the two front port quit functioning on my motherboard, puls plugging into the front leaves wires in the way...

(well actually it turns off the front ports because the pin-outs for the back ports on one set use the channel that the front uses and it doesn't have the voltage to power more than two ports on a channel )

certain things can surge a usb hub.. externals primarily.. i have my keyboard and mouse going into a small hub and every now and then something knocks them out. i unplug the power for the hub and plug it all back in, works fine. now, INTERNAL usb? not sure if they'd suffer from the same problem. do you have a web cam or scanner or camera plugged into the same set of usb's? or mabye you can find an updated driver for your USB system.. it'd be tougher to find then something like a printer driver, but check your device manager and see who made that component, go to their web site, and see if there are upgrades.

most motherboards will have a rail with the ports on it with ribbon cables that you set and screw into the back and then plug into the motherboards usb pin-out/socket, one set might have a power cable that looks like the sound cable for the internal system speaker, one red/two black or some such which you plug into a powered pin-out/socket near the usb pin-out/socket... The motherboards manual or datum sheet will tell you which is a shared usb set or not and also which you might have to add power to with the addition power wire(s)...

Of Course!!..... while I'm in there I'll also twoggle my grommit and splink my manamana...............

mmm, if you open the box and look at the back side of the ports there will be two cables coming off it, one from each seperate port, if there is a third wire set or ribbon cable that comes off it to the motherboard it is a powered set of ports, in the manual it might be called (shared because it shares the channel, but needs power added to it because of the extra voltage needed to power more than the first two ports)

IP, those are only the front panel USB. back panel USB are always usually built into the board.

This may sound like a stupid question, But in device manager, is the usb port enabled? Did it accidently become disabled? or did the driver accidently get deleted?

Kona, yes but back and front will have shared port channels on some motherboards which will demand an extra power source becuase the single power source is not enough for more than the onboard ports... you have to add a second to up the juice to power the back/addons

Asus comes to mind, the A7V 133kt mother boards where like this...

Crissy that is not stuipd nore silly to wonder in the least and it is one of the first things to check in the trouble shooting process when you turn from the device itself to the system

I would probably delete everything in the Hadrware list dealing with USB and reboot so windows will find new hardware and reinstall things how it wants them to be installed (resources and such) and I would also look in the admin logs to see if anything untold took place right before the mouse quit working if this is Windows XP. If Windows 98 I would run Computer Information in the Accessories/System Utils to see what it returned to make sure it actually sees the port in question...

Spikes and such, devices, such as DC mentioned can also zap the sysem and cause windows to loose site of devices at odd moments...

But if you want to try something, re-start your PC and check your BIOS, make sure that all USB ports are 'enable'
My PC has 2 USB port in the back and 2 in front, some times for no apparent reason it disables the ports and I have to 'enable' them in the BIOS setup.
