Uploads: (Do)n'ts and Don'ts.

I've seen, over the years, that a lot of people modify thier desktop and then show it off in the screenshots section. Then, I see 47 emails of people requesting some skin they modified or skin they made to go with it.
Just a friendly reminder, that if you don't own the original skin, do not send to friends or people you don't know.
That is the same as uploading a skin without permission.
Un upload is an upload.
So, think twice about emailing a ported skin to someone-because you never know, it might be me on the other end.

You're right. I saw a screenshot of something of mine that was ported and asked where they got it. They said, "Someone, emailed it to me".
Way to read between the lines, horizon.

This thread is for people who(do not) know about the uploading ports rule.
Acually, this started, when I saw a port and a bunch of email attachments to it. I email the person and they sent it to me, so I could maybe find out who did it. Lucky me, they put in all thier info and email address.
I sent an email to the one who sent it to me and also to the one who ported it. I got a responce that said, "Sorry, didn't know". Again, the reason for the thread.
Let me point out, though,
1.) It was not at this website.
2.) I have taken care of it.

Once, again, this is for the newbies.

What about links to your skin or the original skin in its unaltered state? For example, I've got bits and pieces of several skins assembled into my current desktop (Xero's base theme, substitute Eclipse's buttons and Liquidus' toolbar button states, etc.). If someone asked, would it infringe on anyone's copyright to send them the complete, unchanged Xero, Eclipse and Liquidus themes, exactly as I downloaded them? Or is a link to the themes the most I could do? The problem with just pointing people in the right direction is that there is no way I will remember *where* I got every piece of art work, icon library or sound file; but I do have the original source files tucked neatly away in the corner of my hard drive.

In my particular case, although I have had a request for "how did you do that?", I haven't sent any information or files because I wasn't sure what was legit and what wasn't.

n00b requests guidelines...thanks.

Jeff...technically you download skins for personal use only.

Sometimes the author may include a text file consenting to its redistribution in complet, unaltered form, so then it'd be OK to pass the file on to a third party.

If there is no such consent included it must be assumed there is no consent at all and any distribution in any form would not be covered by 'private use' as it is then 'public distribution', albeit very limited.

To sum up...

If the artist says you can, you can.

If the artists says no, you cannot.

If the artist says nothing, you again cannot....

when in doubt its better not to. than to get in to trouble...i have made quite a few mods that il never distribute for lack of permission...#1 rule if its not your work (even in part) u must have permission to upload to anyone anywhere at any time ... i made that mistake once being a noob myself;) a kind person took me aside and told me the proper way to port.
