Connection to Steam Can't Be Established

I just purchased Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation. When I go to Multiplayer and try to play a 1v1 or custom game, I get the message "Connection to Steam Can't Be Established," and I am unable to play multiplayer.

I have verified that I am signed in to Steam, and I am online when I launch the game.
