Fences 4 continues to prompt me to download and install an update

After already installing the update

Fences 4 is now reminding me every day -- I think since I installed Fences 5 -- to download and install a 13.0 MB update. Please make it stop. :-) I'm on a laptop with an Intel Core i5 processor, running Windows 11.

I'm having the same problem, except that I have Fences 4.22 already installed.  I can't get this thing to stop reminding me to install the update I already have.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Please try purge and reinstall steps as mention here : [Link]. Just make sure to redownload the latest version from your account page. Reboot after the purge. Reinstall and reboot again after the installation. Retest and report back here.

This one does not make as much sense to me as the others. I can understand if you were getting prompted to update 'Fences 5' daily (still annoying) but not to update Fences 4 if you have Fences 5 installed.  Can you clarify that?

Go to:

/Downloads

If there is a 'Stardock' folder there, delete it.  Tell us here if you still get the prompt.

If that fails, and for Fences 4 installs, what is the exact file version of Fences.exe (should be 4.2.2.1)

Hi, thanks for getting back to us!  So for my case, I do not have a /Downloads/Stardock folder.

As for  the file version, I see 4.2.2.1 :

I can do a complete uninstall and reinstall this weekend, but before I do that, will that preserve my fences configuration or would I be starting from scratch for organizing my desktop?

The saved layout snapshots should still be there if you do the purge and reinstall steps mentioned above.

I followed the recommendation and it seems to have worked. I'm no longer receiving the prompt.

One circumstance that may have influenced the behavior: my license was expired. So I renewed my license, then downloaded and installed the software.

Thanks all for your help!

I'm in the same boat. The update popup is nagging me EVERY day to update Fences 4. The update does NOT work. Sometimes it doesn't download any bytes. Sometimes it downloads 16MB (of 12MB). It's clearly broken. There is no option to stop checking for updates. The only thing you can do is cancel and "remind later" -- which is ONE day later. Every day. It's insane.

When I check the product page, the only download I see is for Fences 6. I'm not interested in buying that because I'm happy with Fences 4, which I paid for. I would appreciate being able to use this software without popups reminding me to update. I'm not seeing any download links on my "account page". Can you be more specific? Please help.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. If you have previously purchase Fences 4, it should also be listed in your account. Perhaps there is issue with your account.

Please raise support ticket using the link below, use the "Ask a Question" option. Include all information details on your purchase on Fences 4. Remember to record down the ticket number for future reference if needed. Do not raise multiple ticket, that will make your ticket back to the end of the line. Send once and wait. Ticket will be answer by the order they send in.

The 'About' tab in Fences 4 has a check for updates button as well, should have.

I found the download link in my account (was looking under profile before).
But unfortunately the install just hangs. It looks like it's working but it goes VERY slowly and then eventually it just stops progressing.

Is the install not freeing up the files it's replacing before starting? Do I have to somehow "stop Fences" first before running the install?

Tried again. The installer worked its way through the Fences\Images folder for about ten minutes, updating a .png file every 4 seconds or so.

It got stuck for several minutes on [email protected]

Finally, after 15 minutes, I got a popup saying:

Notice

The following file is in use and can not be updated:

Fences\Layouts\Bottom.fencelayout

Close apps and click Retry or Cancel to install on reboot.

I clicked cancel but then the next file's popup said the same thing.

This repeated for a while until I finally told the entire install to cancel, at which point it asked if I was sure and to press cancel to install on reboot. I clicked cancel but the popup kept happening so I had to kill the install process.

Guys... who wrote this installer? Wow.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. It was not actually clear, at least for me, you're trying to install Fences v4 into Windows 11? If so, first, perhaps it is compatiblity issue between Fences v4 on Windows 11. If it is wrong, report back with information on which Windows version you're trying to install it, also it best if you can also post that Windows OS Build number.

Thank you,

Sorry, I'm on Windows 10 (home). I've declined many times to upgrade despite the regular reminders.
