Unable to start game

I can no longer start the game. Have followed the FAQ and updated DirectX and everything else in there. I get to the animated intro that you see after setting up your game, and the starting planet shows and then immediately the game ends with no error screen. It used to work on this computer, but I guess some update messed it up. Any ideas?

Additionally, if you have submitted a crash report through our automated prompt that pops-up when you experience a game crash, we can look it up by email or name attached to the report to find it quickly.

That is the wrong debug.err.  The correct one is located in Documents\My Games\GalCiv4.

Hi,

I've been assigned to look into this.

There's nothing obvious in the debug.err file to indicate why you're crashing, so if we can get a crash report, that will help us to fix this issue.  You should have a hidden folder C:\ProgramData\Stardock\Galactic Civilizations IV - Supernova (or whatever drive Windows is installed to) which may contain a crash dump if it's still saving the file even if it's not popping up the dialog.

The last thing reported in the debug.err was that it was attempting to create the first turn autosave file. You were only generating a small map, so I wouldn't think that this would be an issue of running out of memory, but possibly some kind of file system error isn't being handled correctly.  Are you able to save custom factions or ship designs?

Thanks!  The crash is happening in your video driver.  It looks like you have the final retail version of the driver according to the diagnostics file in the crash zip, so you probably won't be able to update it.  There's a prefs.ini file in your My Games\GalCiv4 folder.  Try renaming that so that the game will recreate it with the default settings and see if you can get into a game using that.  I'll also ask one of the graphics engineers if they have any suggestions on which settings might be causing you issues.

OK, here are some suggestions of settings you could try changing if resetting to defaults doesn't help:

Try turning off Point Lights

Try a smaller resolution.

OK, here are some suggestions of settings you could try changing if resetting to defaults doesn't help:

Try turning off Point Lights

Try a smaller resolution.  

Turn off "Enable Bloom"

Turn off "Trails"

Turn off "Enable Gel UI"

 
Not a puter guy so what do these settings do in game as they have no explanation pop-up in game.

I know what resolution does but the other 4 are above my pay grade.

  • Point lights are light sources that provide light evenly, like a lightbulb
  • Bloom is a graphical effect that increases the luminosity of light sources and objects that reflect light in a game world
  • Trails kinda blur lights
  • If there is a transparent UI frame, Gel UI sort blurs between the non-transparent layers.

Thx with my old eyes that tells me how to dull some of the brightness.
