Dead ally still allied?

When my brave Vasari Exodus AI ally was viciously slain by the sneaky TEC loyalist AI opponent when they rushed my ally and destroyed their home planet, I was devastated. But, determined not to let their resources go to waste, I send an expedition to claim their territory and resources.

However, I was unable to take my dead ally worlds nor could I destroy their inoperable structures and ships. 

It seems that being an ally is an eternal bond not broken upon annihilation... could the powers that be change this fate?
