DeskScapes 11 Dreams do not animate.

Issue: DeskScapes 11 Dreams do not animate on my copy of Windows 11.

My previous versions of DeskScapes came directly from StarDock, but I bought/installed the current version from Steam.

Steps so far:

1) Adding Codecs

I updated codecs via K-Lite Codec Pack Mega, because that allowed DeskScapes to animate when I used older versions of Windows. This did not fix the problem this time though.

https://codecguide.com/download_k-lite_codec_pack_mega.htm

2) Purge

-- I ran the purge as Administrator, then

-- I uninstalled DeskScapes via Steam, then

-- I reinstalled DeskScapes via Steam.

This did not help.

https://support.stardock.com/space/SHC/1349320730/Start+Menu+purging+and+re-installing

3) I installed Steam and DeskScapes 11 into a clean Windows 11 sandbox. The Dreams did not animate within the sandbox.

4) I used NirSoft InstalledCodec 1.30 to turn off all codecs except for Microsoft’s. This did not help. I then used NirSoft InstalledCodec 1.30 to turn on all of the codecs.

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installed_codec.html

Next Steps:

I might downgrade Windows, if I can do so safely. However, if this issue is shared with other Insider Preview users, then it might be migrated to the next retail version of Windows, so you should have a heads-up.

And yes, I am asking for help even though it’s not your policy to support Insider Preview users. Thank you.

Documentation:

I can provide the following documentation, but it was too large to paste into this post:

-- DxDialog output

-- InstalledCodec output

Here is the beginning of DxDialog output. I can provide the rest, and the InstalledCodec output, but they appear to be too large for this field.

Hello,
Sorry to hear you are having issues. Have you tried changing to any of those 3 Video support setting and see if any of them resolve your issue?

Thanks

I performed a clean boot. Even with all startup programs disabled, the Dreams do not animate.

I installed a similar application called Lively Wallpaper via the Microsoft Store. The Lively Wallpapers do animate correctly. I then uninstalled Lively Wallpaper.

Need to know your Windows full version number please. Use Winver.exe. Sorry, if you have mentioned this, but this issue on any Dreams or only specifics dreams?

Thank you,

The issue occurs with all Dreams in Deskscapes 11. Instead of animating, they look like static wallpaper.

The Lively Wallpapers did animate, but I prefer Deskscapes. I only mention this because it appears to indicate that the ability to have desktop animation isn't disabled in Windows per se.

I will install Deskscapes on my tablet in the morning, and see if it works there. Both my desktop and my tablet have the same version of Windows.

I am no longer in the Insider program, so Windows Update should download the retail version as soon as Microsoft approves it. I left the Insider program, because I wanted to make sure that I have a version of Windows that Stardock will support Deskscapes on.

I am currently away from my computer, but here is the Windows version number as reported by DxDialog.exe yesterday. It is:

Windows 11 Pro Insider Preview 64-bit (10.0, Build 26020) (26020.rs_prerelease.231214-1452)

Thank you,

Paul

Usually when you switch from insider to normal, it just tells you to clean install windows since there is no path from beta/dev/canary back to the standard release.

Just remember to backup your data.

Cheers

The latest beta of Deskscapes may help with this.

We do not support prerelease versions of Windows.

But you're working on it, right?  26100.712 is very close to the release version coming very soon.

So, I am having a similar issue.  If I r-click, show more options, then 'Pause Deskscapes', then do that again to 'Resume Deskscapes', magically it starts again.  I am wondering if it is pausing for a background application that has been mis-identified during start-up?

I am disabling 'Automatically pause when on battery power' and disabling background pausing in the settings.  I will restart and get back to you here.

This is just a work-around!  I would prefer to create a startup script to pause and un-pause deskscapes 30 seconds after start-up, but I do not know how to do it since I have no idea if you have any hooks I could use in a batch file or otherwise.  Since I am not the only one with these issues, if you could open a bug report ticket for the developers that would be great!  A simple option for delayed start-up in the advanced settings would be an excellent way to support these issues.  This would allow me to preserve my other settings.  Right now I am fine with limiting background FPS with my GPU settings if I am gaming and do not remember to pause deskscapes manually, but this needs to be fixxed!
