Cannot move icon in Start11 (2.03)

Cannot move icon in Start11 (2.03)

Icon is added seemingly at random and cannot be moved.

I have created a 23-second video to illustrate this problem. Because I see no way to add it to this ticket, I have placed the video on my website:
https://blinn.com/Start11Flaw/Start11Flaw.mp4

Steps illustrated:

  1. Pin icon for Bleachbit to Start 11.
  2. Instead of being added to the Utilities tab, which was open, it is added to the Stardock tab.
  3. Any attempt to move the icon out of the Stardock tab fails.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug that will eventually be fixed?

Note that I have seen this behavior with other icons, but not all newly added icons.

Sometimes moving an icon to the next or previous page allows me to place it as desired. That workaround did not help with this application.

Thanks.

Quoting djMot,

Okay, I'm sorry... Who are you?  I don't see a Stardock badge on your profile, so I'm not sure why you would ask me to perform a nuclear option and conclude, if it fails to correct the anomaly, that it is "something unique to [my] system".  Sometimes (most times actually) a bug is just a bug.

djMot,

I am truly sorry if I rubbed you the wrong way. As to who I am; I am a Stardock user in a Stardock user's forum trying to help people with their problems. I spend hours playing with Stardock's software trying to break it, and figure out what causes it to break.

I have checked and found that none of the Start11 styles with exception of the Windows 10 style allow moving the top group, as you pointed out in your video. Not sure if this is a bug, or by intention.

As a developer of software yourself, I think you would understand that Stardock offers its software to Windows users that enjoy customizing their UI. That said, many have used registry hacks and other third party software to achieve their customizations over time. Many of these hacks and software titles play havoc with Start11. Some might even prevent Start11 from installing correctly. Many have also forgotten that they installed other customization software or made registry hacks. This is why I asked the questions in the previous post.

I have been customizing Windows for more than 20 years now, and am familiar with most of the things that can go wrong.

The fact that Start11 runs without issue on most systems without issue, simply lead me to believe there was a conflict somewhere within your system. It may indeed be a bug, and as with any software that supplants the UI of Windows, only trial and the process of elimination can lead to the solution.

I don't think it's entirely fair to blame Stardock for this issue until the cause can be found. Especially since this is a preview release.

I appreciate that you have an issue with Start11, and my only intent was to try and help.

Thank you for clarifying your position on all of this.

I'm not convinced, however, that Start11 v2 is working without issue on most systems.  And if it's working on other systems, but not mine, I find that seriously odd.  This computer is working fine in every way I can think of (Start11 the only exception) and I'm unaware of anything that would cause Start11 to misbehave in this particularly specific manner - other than a bug.  Or maybe, as you suggest, by design, but that would be one odd design choice!  Make it easy to do things to every row except the top one?  Not seeing any sense in that.

When it comes to customizing Windows, I typically find no joy in that.  Odd, I know, given the forum I'm posting in.  Usually, I'm quite happy with what Microsoft has provided, and find that each iteration is an improvement over the last.  I even liked the Win 8/8.1 Start Menu page that nearly everyone universally hated.  Win 10's Start Menu was extraordinarily outstanding.  Loved it!  What brought Stardock to my attention was someone showing me Fences.  Now that was sheer brilliance as far as I was concerned and really should be a core Windows feature.  So, I purchased licenses for my home computers and my work computer.  Groupy?  M'eh.  All the other Stardock Windows UI tweakers?  Nah.  So, I use Fences and Start11 and that the extent of my UI tweaks.  I do NOT run all the latest registry tweakers and de-bloaters in an effort to eek out any additional performance or privacy.  Not that privacy isn't a concern, but I won't go to extraordinary lengths and potentially cripple my computer by messing with stuff just because I can or because I know how.

But then came Windows 11 with its four-steps backward Start Menu, and for the life of me, I cannot figure out what Microsoft was thinking.  So, Start11 to the rescue!  But if Microsoft goes back to a decent Start Menu for Win12, I'll use it so as to eliminate an unnecessary customization utility.  I like to run as lean as I can when it comes to aesthetics.  Not that I don't care about the aesthetics, I'm just not down with burdening my system to get them.  Windows is pretty enough out of the box.  Except for their stunningly regressive Win11 Start Menu, that is.

djMot,

I have spent an hour this morning trying to create your issue on my system by changing settings around an trying different configurations. I was unable to reproduce your issue. If you are willing, export the following registry settings for Start11 and PM me a copy or post the text here. That way I can get the settings on my system the same as you are using, and I will run more tests. Please include the Windows 11 version and Start11 version running on your system.

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Start8\Start8.ini\Start8

Alternatively, you could create a backup settings file using Start11, and send that.

Nah.  Stardock needs to take ownership of this, not you.  Thanks all the same.

No worries. As a workaround for now, you could create a new group and leave the name blank. Drag this group to the top of the menu. Now you should be able to move icons in the top row of your first group (which is actually now your second group).

Thanks.  Huge waste of space, tho.  I'll just hope Stardock figures this out; it really can't be that hard.

The actual workaround is to put the top row somewhere else, do what you need to do to it, then move it back up to the top.

Got it. Good luck. Hopefully someone will figure it out.

Hello again,
I am asking here, just as what I am asking on BillBlinn, other thread with another issue on the top rows.

Just wondering. Please try this, back up your setting, once that is saved. Click on the Reset settings. Restart explorer. Don't restore setting yet, just as a test create a new group. And try delete the top group. Does the issue still there?

You can do the Restore setting after the test is done. Was thinking it might have something to do with corrupt setting files.

Thanks

I believe that I may have a useful clue. The new Start11 instance on the tablet computer now displays the top-row problem.

I've been setting the menu up on the tablet and had been checking after each change. Of course I neglected to do that, made several changes, and successfully broke it. My primary objective was to eliminate the Recent Files section. That section is now gone and icons in the top row are affected.

While I can't tell you which change is to blame, I do have saved settings from earlier today when the top row worked properly and a new file with the current settings. If that will help, please let me know how to provide the files.

This is not the only difference between the two files, but this line occurs in the current settings and is absent from the earlier (good) settings:
"HideRecentAllApps11"="1"

FOUND IT!

I have confirmed this operation on both computers:

  1. When SHOW RECENT DOCUMENTS is enabled, the top row is affected.
  2. When SHOW RECENT DOCUMENTS is disabled, operation is normal.

Confirmed!

That fixed it for me, too.  Good work there, BillBlinn!

That said, you might have noticed that "recent documents" do not appear in my videos.  I thought that setting was probably off, but didn't look because it seemed obvious that it was off.  So, since it was ON for me all this time, where are my recent documents?  I mean, yeah, I do a whole lot of nuthin' most of the time.  Not totally nuthin', tho, lol.

Does the Windows Pro style preclude having Recent Documents?  If so, why?  Bugs, bugs, more bugs...

Bill,

Not seeing this behavior on my system. There must be another setting enabled that conflicts with the Show recent documents setting.

Very strange. If I enable the Windows Pro style, the Show recent documents switch works as expected. And I am unable to reproduce the "first row" behavior by turning it on.

We will be investigating this next week to see if a cause can be found.

Out if interest what scaling factor are your monitors set to?

100% (main computer)

175% (tablet)

ETA information about monitors and other Stardock apps.

The primary computer (a Lenovo ThinkPad) has three screens, two standalone monitors (2560x1440) and the built-in screen (actual 3840x2160, but running at 2560x1440). All use 100% scaling.

Also, Fences is installed on both computers. I added it after solving the top-row problem on the tablet, but it was on the main computer previously.)

Icon Packager and Cursor FX are on the main computer, but not the tablet.
